One look at a Drexel Declaration piece and it’s easy to understand why these pieces are so desirable. Featuring blend of contemporary design elements with clear inspiration from shaker style furniture. While the design of this piece was top of the line the condition was far from it. Clearly, it was time for a full restoration to bring this back to its former glory. What I did: -   Glued down any loose veneer with @titebondwoodproducts wood glue -   Patched any missing veneer with salvaged vintage walnut veneer - Filled any voids with @jbweldDIY 2 part epoxy putty tinted with mohawk powder stains -   Reglued the entire base -  Sanded the original finish off with @3Mabrasives Cubitron sanding pads -   Sealed the piece with @Zinsser Sealcoat -   Performed color touchups with @mohawkfinishing Blandals, powder stains, and graining pens -   Sprayed a light coat of toner (Zinsser sealcoat + Transtint medium brown dye) -  Topcoated the piece with @geminiindustries Evo clear Satin Sheen Comment “product list” for links to the materials used in this restoration. 📋 #furnitureflip #furniturereel #furniturerestoration #midcenturymodern #furniturerehab #DrexelDeclaration #kippstewart #stewartmacdougall #furniture #sideboard

This Drexel declaration chest has seen better days. Pieces in rough shape might look scary, but with the right tools and know how, you can get them back to looking factory fresh! Here’s how we restored it👇: 1. The first step is always to remove the old finish. To do this we used our bahco carbide scraper. 2. There were quite a few scratches on this piece, so we took a wet rag and an iron to steam them out. 3. Once the piece has been stripped and scratches have been steamed out, we use our festool orbital sander with 150 grit to sand the surface. 4. We use @mohawkfinishing epoxy putty to fill any veneer chips. Once the epoxy has hardened, we sand until smooth. 5. We use Mohawks blendal sticks to grain paint any of the chipped areas that were previously filled. 6. Next, we spray 1 coat of @geminiindustries hydro EVO sealer, and scuff sand with 320 grit once dry. 7. Drexel Declaration’s walnut veneers are beautiful as is, but we decided a few coats of light walnut toner were needed to help even everything out. To mix this toner, we take Mohawk ultra penetrating NGR dye stain in light walnut color, and put in acetone. We eyeball the ratio, but the dyes are strong so you don’t need much when mixing in your toner base. You can also use Geminis NGR low VOC dye base to mix toner. 8. The last step is to spray 2 coats of Geminis hydro EVO topcoat in dull (matte) sheen, scuffing with 320 after the first coat.
