Okay, we LOVE the ducks and all the fun wildlife at our parks, but we just wanted to remind y'all to PLEASE don't feed them.🤠 Human "snack food" does not offer the proper nutrition for our feathered friends, so feeding them carbs (like bread) can cause serious health issues. Feeding them can also habituate them to interact with humans, which can eventually put them in harm's way. So next time you see the beautiful wildlife in our parks, please remember that this is their home, and introducing human food can disrupt their ecosystem and habitats. 🦆 Feed Ducks the Right Way; Protect Wildlife; Protect Water; Protect the Future A small act at the park can shape an ecosystem. Feeding ducks feels harmless; nostalgic; kind. Many of us grew up tossing bread into ponds without thinking twice. But modern wildlife science tells a clearer story; what we feed wild birds determines whether we support their health or slowly harm it. When done correctly; feeding wildlife can be responsible; respectful; and environmentally sound. When done incorrectly; it can cause malnutrition; water pollution; deformities; and long term ecosystem imbalance. Here is the evidence based guide; simple; practical; and built to last. 🦆 What Ducks Naturally Eat Wild ducks are omnivores. In nature they forage for aquatic plants; grasses; seeds; insects; and small invertebrates. Their digestive systems evolved for nutrient dense; low sodium; natural foods; not processed human snacks. When we replace their natural diet with bread or chips; we create nutritional imbalance. When we mimic natural food sources; we support health. 🥇 The Safest and Most Responsible Foods for Ducks Frozen Peas; Thawed High fiber; moderate protein; rich in B vitamins; peas closely resemble aquatic vegetation. They do not cloud water or sink into sludge. Offer small handfuls; no more than they consume immediately. Cracked Corn A natural grain source; affordable; widely available. Corn provides energy; but should be supplemental; not the entire diet. Moderation protects balance. Plain Rolled Oats Uncooked; unsweetened oats are easy to digest and mimic wild seed intake. Avoid flavored or sugary varieties. Chopped Romaine Lettuce Hydrating; nutrient rich compared to iceberg; romaine resembles the leafy vegetation ducks consume naturally. Halved Grapes Hydrating treat; cut to prevent choking; feed sparingly due to sugar content. This ring-necked duck had mistaken wet, icy pavement for a body of water and crash-landed onto the hard surface. As a diving bird, the poor animal couldn't take off while on land. Distressed and stranded, he desperately flapped his wings, but it was no use. Thankfully, Tony was in the area and noticed the struggling duck. He quickly sought help.⁠ ⁠ This was the first time a ring-necked duck had ever been admitted to Toronto Wildlife Centre. The medical team confirmed the new patient’s broken feathers had prevented him from flying, but that wasn’t the only trouble he faced. The poor duck had swallowed a lead pellet and the toxic substance was leaching into his system. Everyone, meet Momma. Momma came to us after being attacked by something (probably a turtle or a dog) that had taken off half of her bill and tongue. Thankfully, she was able to keep enough of it to move it to eat. She just couldn't bite off grasses and other things without the end of her bill, so she had to go into captivity to survive. She was a beautiful duck before the attack, but we believe that she became even more beautiful without half of her bill, as it brought out the black eyeliner around her eyes.
