How Does the System Decide Which Server Gets Your Request? 🤔📌 Million requests hitting your system every second. Someone has to decide which server handles what. Here's exactly how that decision is made 👇 ⚙️ Load Balancing Algorithms — The Real Breakdown 1️⃣ Round Robin Request 1 → Server A, Request 2 → Server B, Request 3 → Server C, repeat. Simple, equal distribution. Zero intelligence.❗ Problem: Server A gets a 10ms request, Server B gets a 10 second request — both treated equally. Uneven load builds up fast. 2️⃣ Weighted Round Robin Server A gets 60% traffic, Server B gets 40% — based on CPU/RAM capacity. Used when servers have different hardware specs. 👉 Netflix and AWS ELB use this for mixed instance fleets. 3️⃣ Least Connections New request always goes to server with fewest active connections. Smarter than Round Robin — accounts for request processing time. 👉 Best for apps with variable request durations like video processing or file uploads. 4️⃣ IP Hashing Hash the user's IP → always routes to the same server. Same user, same server, every time. 👉 Critical when session data is stored locally on the server — breaks without this. 5️⃣ Least Response Time Routes to server with lowest active connections AND fastest response time combined. Most intelligent algorithm — used in high performance systems. 👉 HAProxy and Nginx Plus support this natively. 🧠 The Real Problem — Consistent Hashing IP Hashing works until a server goes down. Remove one server → all hash values shift → every user hits a different server → sessions break. 👉 Solution: Consistent Hashing — only redistributes traffic from the failed server, not everyone. Used inside Cassandra, DynamoDB, and every serious distributed system. 💡 Real Insight Round Robin is where you start.
