If you want to go down into the valley to the falls it’s probs another 30 mins) Kawah Ijen hike + sulfur lake + blue fire (I really don’t recommend the blue fire part. Extreme overtourism and I’d say almost dangerous. EAST JAVA FAMILY GUIDE 🇮🇩🌋 After chasing waterfalls, hiking volcanos, and wandering through otherworldly forests with our little adventurers, here’s our honest, no-filter breakdown of East Java’s most epic spots - what wowed us, what felt “meh,” and the hidden corners we’ll be dreaming of forever: 🌋 Bromo Crater – 9/10 Iconic, surreal, and not crowded if you go when all the jeep tours left. Volcanic noise, and that wild Martian landscape = unforgettable. 🌿 Coban Ciblungan – 5/10 Cute and calm, but didn’t quite wow us after seeing the big-name waterfalls. Nice for a quick cool-down stop. 🔥 Ijen Blue Fire – 7/10 A wild experience, but intense with kids. The blue flames are cool (literally and figuratively), but the crowds are real. Stunning crater lake at sunrise though! 🌊 Tumpak Sewu – 9/10 Jaw-dropping. Like a real-life fantasy. The hike down is adventurous and wet - not for toddlers - but for older kids? Epic waterfall magic. 🌳 De Djawatan Forest – 8/10 A little piece of Middle-earth in Java. Mossy trees, mystical vibes, and a great spot to slow down and let the kids roam. 🌾 Teras Semeru – 8/10 Rice fields with volcano views - yes, please! Peaceful, scenic, and a great place for a drone shot. 💦 Coban Sriti Waterfall – 6/10 Dramatic twin falls in a hidden canyon. Beautiful but hard to reach, especially with kids in tow. One for the adventure-loving families. Better only stick to the Panorama Viewpoint! 🌄 Seruni Viewpoint – 10/10 Hands down the best sunrise we’ve ever seen. Tumpak Sewu is a magnificent waterfall located in East Java, Indonesia, between the cities of Lumajang and Malang, specifically in the Sidomulyo village of Pronojiwo District. The waterfall lies within the boundaries of Lumajang Regency and is easily accessible via Sidomulyo village. 🏞 What Kind of Place Is It? Known as the "Thousand Waterfalls" Tumpak Sewu is a stunning natural wonder with waters cascading in a wide arc from 120 meters high, surrounded by lush green forests, caves, natural pools, and trekking paths. The majestic silhouette of Mount Semeru in the background adds an epic touch to the scenery. 🚗 How to Get There? By Air: Fly to Surabaya or Malang. By Road: From Malang to Sidomulyo village, it's about a 2-hour drive (sometimes up to 4 hours due to winding roads and traffic); from there, a 200-meter walk to the waterfall. Opt for a private car, taxi, or guided tour. From Lumajang, it's 47 km south, entering via Sidomulyo. Public Transport: Take a minibus from Malang to Pronojiwo or Sidomulyo, then an ojek (motorcycle taxi) to the waterfall. 📅 When to Go? The best time is the dry season from May to October. During the rainy season (November-April), the waterfall flows stronger, but paths can be slippery. 🥾 What to Do? Admire the panoramic view of the waterfall. East Java is incredible 🤯 We have never seen so many epic places in such a small part of island! Volcanos, craters, blue fire, waterfalls, viewpoints. Places which took our breath away. It was definitely the hardest trip of our travels! Waking up at midnight, traveling in the night, night hikes in very hard conditions, catching sunrises at the tops.. But we will never forget it! If somebody asks us if we would do it again, the answer is: 100% YES! It is not possible to skip East Java during your holiday in Bali. This trip will change your life! When we planned to visit Tumpak Sewu waterfall in East Java, I wasn’t in the best health. I was on my period and dealing with cramps, so the plan was simple just admire the waterfall from the top, enjoy the view, and head back. But the moment I saw it from above, I knew I had to go down and experience it up close. The descent is steep, but the steps are well paved, and once you reach the bottom, you’re greeted by the most massive, powerful waterfall You will get completely drenched, but trust me, it’s 100% worth it. The real challenge, though, is the climb back up. It can get tiring, so carry enough water and take your time. 🇮🇩 EAST JAVA, INDONESIA SERIES — Days 1 & 2 ✈️ flew from bali (1 hour flight) to surabaya then took a 1.5-2 hour bus to Malang city 📍 Malang is a laid back city in east java and the perfect base for exploring the waterfall 😴 stayed at @madorhostel.tours hostel for $5 a night day 1: 🌈 kampung warna Warni Jodipan (Rainbow Village)�🤪 malang night market day 2: 💦 tumpak sewu waterfall �the hike down is slippery and steep but so worth it! just wear water shoes & bring a dry bag or something to keep your phone dry there’s a few other waterfalls you can visit next to tumpak &&& a cave you can walk through! 🚘 it’s about a 2 hr drive from Malang 💸 entry: Rp 100k ($6) after the waterfall we drove a few hours to sleep in a nearby hotel close to mount bromo as we’ll he hiking that volcano starting tomorrow at 2 am! for this 3 day tour, i booked with @madorhostel.tours (cost around $135), all meals are included + transport + accommodation so all of that was done for me already, but we stayed in a home stay called “persona bromo homestay” ✈️ follow @wheretonexttt__ for the rest of the east java series 🇮🇩 #eastjava #madorhostel #malang #tumpaksewu solotravel
