On this day in 1951, the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) was living in exile. The biggest news for the Duke in April 1951 was the publication of his memoirs, A King’s Story. The New York Times Book Review ran a massive feature on the book. By April 19, the Duke was in the middle of a major publicity blitz in the United States and Europe.��The book was a sensation because it was the first time a former British monarch had told “their side” of a constitutional crisis. Greetings from New York City, where we’ve been walking in the footsteps of Philip’s great-grandfather, William Waldorf Astor, who built the original Waldorf Hotel in 1893, which subsequently merged with his cousin’s hotel to become the Waldorf Astoria. I’d love to be able to slip through a wrinkle in time and meet William Waldorf himself in Manhattan’s Gilded Age, before he emigrated to England to raise his family. As you can see from this portrait of WWA, he was a stern-looking gentleman, though he seems to me to have walked out of a novel by Henry James or Edith Wharton. His wife Mary died young - not long after the move to England - leaving William Waldorf the widowed father of four small children (one of whom died not long after her mother). Despite his austere appearance, WWA was possessed of an unusually fantastical imagination, and wrote a series of rambling gothic novels, as well as creating a number of rather more accomplished sculptures. He had a great passion for British history - hence his choice to live in Hever Castle in Kent, the Tudor childhood home of Anne Boleyn - and also believed in ghosts. Sadly, his own ghost seems as absent from his namesake hotel as it does from his English residences - so it seems unlikely I’ll have a supernatural encounter, however fleeting. Even so, I hope he might appreciate his great grandson’s pilgrimage to the @waldorfnyc - and I’ll report back if any otherworldly presence becomes apparent tonight. But for now, I’m sending good wishes, as always, and waving from the storied Waldorf Astoria…
