If you take a look at a moray eel’s skeleton, you’ll find a strange set of bones with teeth at their ends. These are the eel’s second set of jaws, called pharyngeal jaws. In this video we take a close look at these bones and show how eels use their second set of jaws to eat. #animals #science Specimen use made possible by the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.

Moray eels have terrible eye-sight and rely heavily on their incredible sense of smell to catch their prey. Nocturnal by nature it is not common to see moray honeycombs like this out and about during the day, which is such a shame as their swimming and body movement is so mesmerising to watch. Although their snake like bodies and sharp jagged teeth are intimidating on the eye, moray eels are in general, actually very gentle and relaxed creatures. Only ever really causing harm when disturbed or feeling threatened. The more time I spent with these ocean dragons the more I appreciate them and their surprisingly calm and often soft personalities. #morayeel #honeycombmorayeel #eel #marinelife

Inside the Bite: Moray Eel Teeth Up Close Up close with a moray eel as it opened wide—and what looks like a yawn quickly turns into a glimpse of one of the ocean’s most impressive bite systems. Rows of long, needle-sharp teeth line the jaws, perfectly designed to grip slippery prey. From this angle, you really see just how specialized and powerful these predators are… built for precision, not chaos. Despite the intimidating look, this behavior is completely natural and not a threat—just another raw moment from life on the reef. Fun Facts Moray eels have sharp, backward-pointing teeth to stop prey from escaping. They possess a second set of jaws (pharyngeal jaws) that shoot forward to pull food down their throat. What looks like a “yawn” is usually just breathing—pumping water over their gills. Their teeth aren’t for chewing—they grab and swallow prey whole. Different moray species have different tooth shapes depending on what they eat (fish vs crustaceans). DYK, green moray eels are not actually green? They have a unique layer of yellow mucus on their brown skin that protects them from parasites and bacteria, helps them slide into small crevices in the reef, and gives them that greenish color! Today, we celebrate the incredible diversity of wildlife that shares our planet. From majestic mammals to vibrant birds and fascinating underwater creatures, every species plays a vital role in our ecosystem. Let's take a moment to appreciate nature's wonders and commit to protecting their habitats for future generations. 🌍💙 What’s your favorite wildlife moment? Share below!
