“I don’t have favorites, but I love them. Each one.” —William Eggleston For William Eggleston, the dye-transfer print process allowed him to achieve the richness of tonal depth and color saturation that he had been searching for in his photographs. Guy Stricherz and Irene Malli have printed Eggleston’s works for the last 25 years on Vashon Island, Washington. In the early 1990s, when Kodak stopped producing the dyes, paper, and the Matrix film used in the process, Stricherz and Malli helped acquire the remaining available materials to produce these final photographs. In this technically advanced, handmade process, the original image is split into three separation negatives that are then enlarged onto film matrices and immersed in dye baths of cyan, magenta, and yellow, respectively. One at a time, the individual matrices are pressed and rolled onto a special fiber paper, resulting in the final color photograph. William Eggleston 📸 A photographer who helped make the art world take colour photography seriously, at a time when many still viewed it as vulgar or commercial. Eggleston believed in what he called a “democratic way of looking” - the idea that no subject is more important than another. A tricycle, a diner booth, a red ceiling. Everything deserves the same level of attention. Colour became the perfect tool for this way of seeing and his influence can still be felt today in photography, cinema and visual culture more broadly.
