These two are just single-celled organisms; basically a bunch of building blocks and cell machinery wrapped in a membrane, and here you can see what happens when that membrane bursts and spills its contents out. . The smaller organism, Holophrya, has harpoon-like structures around its cell mouth that are expelled to immobilize prey. They usually go after smaller microorganisms or decomposing organic matter, so this whole scene was so unexpected my jaw was on the floor. . When I found these two, Holophrya’s little harpoons had already fired and pierced the cell membrane of the larger organism, a Stentor, and it was tugging on the Stentor’s membrane. After a few seconds, the membrane popped almost like a balloon, and the Stentor’s cell contents spilled into the environment for Holophrya to feed on. . Holophrya has sensory mechanisms that let it detect the chemical signals coming from the spilled contents of the Stentor. So it kept swimming around for minutes, swallowing all the soup-like cytoplasm droplets and solid chunks of organelles, and even the bits of lunch Stentor had earlier. . While Holophrya was feeding on its spilled “guts,” the Stentor was busy repairing the hole in its membrane. Although it lost a lot of cell mass, Stentor has the ability to recover from all this and regenerate its deformed cell back to normal like nothing has happened. I wish I had that skill of regenerating emotionally, I’m like a savant of sad memories and broken cell membranes. 😂 . Thank you for reading! I’ll share a three-minute clip of this on my exclusive pages so you can watch the Holophrya keep feeding on the bits while the Stentor continues to repair itself. Your support makes it possible for me to keep posting, and I appreciate it. . Best, James Weiss

Making major headway, I just built this mainframe controller for all of the electronics. All of the big electronics, like power supplies and controls are built, but the micro electronics and signal conditioning is still in progress. I still need to build a chassis for the microscope itself, but I’ve got about everything I need Currently leak testing the chamber itself, and I’ve achieved 1/60,000,000th of an atmosphere inside I will be outsourcing the fabrication of the lenses, my machine tools are not precise enough. But I’ve made a rough draft of the detector and electron gun. I’m planning on capturing the first images on an oscilloscope before I digitally aquire an image to ease troubleshooting. But the ultimate goal is to get an image in this screen I have hooked up to my Xbox here I’ll try answering as many questions as possible in the comments

Your favorite microscope bro 🫥 has upgraded his camera game 😆. I hope to bring y'all better, more interesting videos and maybe you'll notice the difference in today's post. Anyways, this time we're looking at an algae called Volvox. 🔬 I've been wanting to do a video on Volvox for a while, but finally have the equipment to do it justice. Volvox are actually colonies of hundreds to thousands of smaller cells that work together to do lots of things. Some are moving the colony towards a light source for photosynthesis, some are making the food, and others are reproducing. You can find them in places like freshwater ponds that get plenty of sunlight. They are super fragile and need steady conditions to thrive. Please let me know if you enjoyed this style of filming as I'm always looking for ways to improve! And if you're new here, I post videos of microorganisms, crystals, and other interesting substances under a microscope. Give this page a follow to see more. 😆 Best, Alex
