A DELIBERATE BREATHING PATTERN FOR RAPIDLY CONTROLLING STRESS & IMPROVING MOOD, SLEEP • - There are a lot of ways to control stress and improve mood, and to improve sleep. These include deliberate breath work and meditation and of course meditation has other effects as well. - All of these generally circle back to regulation of the autonomic nervous system which is the component of our nervous system which regulates the balance of alertness and calm. In this excerpt from the latest @whoop podcast, I describe emerging research that compared different patterns of deliberate breathing and meditation for their efficacy to positively adjust mood, sleep patterns, resting heart rate and regulate stress. - The approach that worked best was cyclic sighing which is a sight variant of physiological sighs: You inhale deeply through the nose and then add a second brief inhale through the nose to make sure that your lungs are maximally inflated, then you do a prolonged exhale through the mouth until your lungs are empty. (That’s the physiological sigh). You repeat that (cyclic sighing). - This pattern of breathing mimics what occurs occurs during sleep when we become hypoxic and need to adjust oxygen and carbon dioxide levels but done intentionally while awake it is a powerful way to rapidly calm your nervous system.
