I got wind of the controversy about @purduenorthwest Chancellor Thomas L. Keon’s comments at commencement when he mocked an “Asian” language. I avoided watching the video because I knew it was going to be offensive and enraging. But this morning, I watched it and my reaction was just as predicted. These “jokes” are so tired. So old. So ignorant. So NOT FUNNY!! And most importantly, they are degrading and prove that white supremacy, which is all about dismissing any other culture and race that doesn’t fall in line with whiteness, is still alive and well even in supposed institutes of higher education where you claim to be “welcoming and inclusive to all people”. Words only matter if there is action behind them. We’re not idiots. We are paying attention to those who just check the box and those who really want to do the work.
