Each Of These African Species Play An Important Role In Their Environment. They are a keystone species. They have a large effect on their natural environment. If they were to go extinct it would create a domino effect on the ecosystem. For example, cheetahs manage the population of small antelope species & other herbivorous. If their main predator went extinct, their population would increase & the land would not be able to support them, which in turn would affect the survival of other species. Consider what happened in Yellowstone National Park with the removal of wolves. The elk species boomed & the land was stripped of vegetation. When wolves were reintroduced, it helped create a balance in the ecosystem, allowing the land to recover & create a healthy elk population. Elephants are another example. I’m sure you’ve heard the quote from Rudyard Kipling’s, ‘The Jungle Book.” “The elephants created this jungle. They made all that belongs: the mountains, the trees, the birds in the trees.” Elephants are “ecosystem engineers.” When digging up roots, the holes left behind create watering holes for other species, when they feed from trees, they’ll break branches that allow smaller species to feed from the left-over leaves, even knocking down a tree can create homes & food opportunities for other species. Each of these African species is found on the reserve that VETPAW helps protect. It is our mission to ensure their survival & the healthy growth of their ecosystems.
