Embryo Update: day 3… unfortunately our little embryo’s odds aren’t looking the best. 😣 Grading wise it’s pretty much at the bottom of the day 3 scale (we’re at grade 1, on a scale of 1-4 with 4 being the best…) So if anyone else has had success from the embryo not looking good on day 3, we’d love to hear! Trying to keep the faith and hoping that the Danish swimmers will kick in and buck up the embryo! There’s still hope…🤞 We’re pencilled in for a transfer on Saturday but how the embryo develops until then will determine what’s best to do. Weirdly I’m feeling optimistic at this update and Whitney has felt more upset by the news. Whereas Whitney has been more optimistic from the get go of being told we only have one. It’s like only one of us can be upset at a time. 😅 Thank you sooo much to our family & friends and all of you lovelies for the comments, love & support! It truly means so much! What is an embryo SUPPOSED to look like on the day of transfer? It depends because they are constantly changing. A crucial part of conception is the process of the embryo hatching out of its shell (zona pellucida). Embryos pulse: contract and expand into to break out of the zona pellucida and attach to the uterine lining (implantation). Depending on when the embryologist takes a photo or what the embryo is doing at the time of transfer (contracting or expanding) the same embryo can look different but doing EXACTLY what it’s supposed to do for conception to occur. This was one of the greatest stories I’ll get to tell in my career. This egg was retrieved, but it didn’t have its outer shell (zona pellucida). For reference, most eggs have this outer shell to protect them and prevent more than one sperm from entering them. But since we performed ICSI, we know only one sperm would enter the egg. So we injected a sperm and hoped for the best. The next morning (day 1), the egg showed normal signs of fertilization. This means it had 2 pronuclei (one from the egg and one from the sperm) and a polar body. Of note, most fertilized eggs have 2 polar bodies, but we believe this egg lost its first polar body when it was expelled from its shell. No biggie, though, because the polar bodies eventually dissolve anyway. On day 2, the embryo consisted of 4 perfect cells (2-6 is considered normal, depending on what time of day you check them). On day 3, it consisted of 8 perfect cells (6-12ish is considered normal). On day 4, the cells began compacting into a morula. On day 5, the embryo entered the blastocyst stage of development. We gave it one more day to develop, and it’s a good thing we did! On day 6, the embryo was a beautiful, expanded (fully hatched) blastocyst that we were able to biopsy and freeze. Excited to share this positive update! We didn’t get any healthy embryos during our last cycle in October and we were heartbroken. IVF takes such a toll on everyone around you, it’s the money, emotions, stress on your body. To get two healthy embryos this cycle I am so extremely grateful. We didn’t receive the news we hoped for today… 🥺 IVF ROUND 2 UPDATE: Embryo Transfer day Today we found out that unfortunately none of our embryos have made it to blastocyst stage. Typically on day 5, they should be blastocysts. We were hopeful at least 1 out of 5 would have reached that stage. Instead we had 2 morulas, so they transferred 2 embryos. 1 is looking slightly better than the other one. We were upset by the news but hopeful that now they’re home where they’re meant to be, that at least one will keep growing and developing. 🤞✨ We’d love to hear if any of y’all had success from morulas? 🙏
