The 8 phases of EMDR! 🩷 One of the biggest misconceptions I hear “EMDR is just looking at the moving light & thinking about your trauma.” That is a massive oversimplification (&so is this video tbh. It’s really hard to condense a full therapy into a minute and a half video). If you want more clarity on the reprocessing phases, let us know & we can create a longer video for you where we actually do the reprocessing. 🫶 Forgot to mention (but also a part of phase 3), right before the desensitization your therapist will assess for emotions, sensations, level of distress, negative cognition, positive cognition, and how true the positive cognition feels. ✨ #EMDR #EMDRtherapy #mentalhealth #trauma #anxiety

I often get asked: “How does EMDR work?” Let me explain here 👇🏻 Our brains can heal themselves and EMDR creates the space for us to be able to do that. It's like updating the file cabinet. Putting old emotions where they belong, in the past. We remember the event and forget the pain. It is not happening now. The body heals from a cut if you clean and dress the wound. We take it for granted. I explain we have similar healing mechanisms for the mind (2 hours of REM-powered dream sleep) and that EMDR is an artificial way of accessing the same healing mechanism. It makes bad things less bad. It doesn't erase, it takes the sting out of the memory so it doesn't affect you as much. It allows a person to access a memory file that was believed to be locked and unchangeable and to process it to sometimes see it differently and feel better about it; using the power of their mind to achieve those results. My nervous system feels like it controls my life most days😭 and thought based therapy just doesn’t feel like it’s enough anymore. So I started EMDR & IFS. Can’t wait to share this journey with you guys! Part 1. #emdr #ifs #therapy #healingjoyrney

IYKYK👀 Turns out the things we survived don’t just go away because we tell ourselves we are “over it”. Sometimes healing looks like watching a light move back and forth while your brain finally gets to process what it never had the chance to. ✨ Follow along @ananda.demaio.therapy for more on using EMDR and bilateral stimulation (shown here) for healing trauma #emdr #therapy #traumahealing #trauma #nervoussystemhealing

Ever heard something like this from your client and suddenly you feel stressed about what to do next? If you’ve ever felt stuck or anxious about how to handle these responses during your EMDR sessions, you most certainly aren’t alone. Here’s the thing: “nothing” is typically one of two things happening. 1- It’s often a protective part or an internal conflict between parts. 2- Or it can be a sign of dissociation/disconnection Instead of stopping or panicking, try getting curious so get some clarity about what’s happening for the client. You can use any of these phrases as interweaves: → “What do you notice in your body as you say that?” → “What do you hear your thoughts saying right now?” → “If the ‘nothing’ had a feeling or texture, what might it be?” These gentle pivots can open up so much without forcing the process. You don’t have to have the perfect next move—just a grounded, curious presence. Let’s break it down🤸🏾♂️ 👀 EMDR helps regulate emotions by reprocessing distressing memories using eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. 🧩 Internal Family Systems (aka IFS): helps to regulate emotions by helping you understand and soothe inner parts that carry intense feelings 🧠Accelerated Resolution Therapy (aka ART): Uses imagery and eye movements to quickly reduce the emotional intensity of painful memories. 🌱Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (aka DBT): Teaches skills like mindfulness and distress tolerance to manage intense emotions in the moment. 🫂 Somatic Therapy: helps you regulate emotions by helping you notice and release tension stored in the body, and increase your ability to identify and meet felt needs.

⚠️ What I wish every client knew before starting EMDR therapy… It’s not always easy. You’ll probably want to cancel session. Your brain might go exactly where you didn’t plan to go (hello, childhood stuff 👋🏻 ). You might feel stuck, overwhelmed, emotional, or even doubt the process. But I’ll also warn you… You might start feeling safe in your own mind and body. You might stop people-pleasing. You might finally trust yourself. And you might begin to like who you’re becoming. That’s what healing can look like—and you deserve it. ✨ Follow @theemdrhealingpractice for more

Think EMDR can’t be as effective virtually as it is in person? Think again! Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) uses bilateral stimulation to help desensitize trauma-related emotions and reprocess distressing memories. As long as you’re in a safe, uninterrupted space for your session, EMDR can be just as powerful online as it is in person, helping you heal and move forward. Got questions about EMDR therapy? EMDR is one of the most effective trauma therapies—but most people have no idea how it actually works or why it’s so powerful. It uses bilateral stimulation, like eye movements, to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories stored in the limbic system that talk therapy can’t easily access. Studies show EMDR reduces PTSD symptoms significantly faster than traditional therapy, often in fewer sessions. It’s recommended by WHO, APA, and VA for trauma treatment. Try this: Tap your shoulders left to right while thinking about a tough memory. It mimics EMDR’s rhythm and can help reduce emotional intensity. Intensives are deep, focused work, designed for people who want to move further, faster. An EMDR intensive isn’t just a “longer therapy session.” It’s a focused block of time where you can: Go deeper without the stop-start of weekly sessions Stay with the memory until your nervous system actually shifts Leave grounded and steady, not raw or overwhelmed For many people , especially first responders, trauma survivors, or those feeling stuck, intensives can be the bridge between coping and true relief. ✨ Sometimes healing needs more than 50 minutes. That’s where intensives come in. Save this if you’ve ever wondered what actually happens in an EMDR intensive. 👇👇👇 1️⃣ You might feel worse before you feel better. EMDR can bring up emotions between sessions—this is a normal part of healing. 2️⃣ Your brain is doing the work. EMDR helps reprocess stuck trauma, but you’re the one healing yourself. 3️⃣ You don’t have to share every detail. Unlike talk therapy, EMDR focuses on your internal experience, not retelling every event. 4️⃣ It’s okay if memories feel blurry or your don’t remember them. Your body remembers and your brain processes things in its own way Clarity often comes later. 5️⃣ Support your nervous system. Your brain is working hard—things like movement, grounding techniques, and rest can help you process and integrate the work. EMDR can be life-changing, but it’s normal to feel unsure at first.
