At the 89th Academy Awards in 2017, La La Land was mistakenly announced as Best Picture instead of the actual winner, Moonlight. The presenters had been given the wrong envelope—it was the Best Actress envelope (which had Emma Stone for La La Land), not the Best Picture envelope. So when they read it, they said La La Land had won. The producers of La La Land had even started giving speeches on stage when someone from the team came up and corrected the mistake. Eventually, it was officially announced that Moonlight was the true Best Picture winner. It’s remembered as one of the most chaotic and shocking moments in live award show history.
