​“Emoter” (2002) is a kinetic sculpture by American artist Tim Hawkinson that explores the interplay between randomness and human emotion. The piece features a large photograph of Hawkinson’s face, segmented into movable sections controlled by mechanical components. These components are driven by random electronic signals, causing the facial features to shift and create various expressions. ​ Hawkinson’s intention was to investigate how much inflection and emotion could be generated in the face using random input signals. He observed that viewers would interpret different emotions from the changing expressions, highlighting our innate tendency to read faces and assign emotional meaning, even when the changes are produced randomly. ​ “Emoter” exemplifies Hawkinson’s fascination with the human form, mechanics, and the perception of time. By using his own image and integrating mechanical elements, he challenges the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical, prompting viewers to reconsider their interpretations of human expression and emotion.

@pocket.catalog TIM HAWKINSON - EMOTER, 2000 “It’s something that emotes, and it’s motorized. Emoter falls into the category of body depiction—references to the body—like the bathtub-generated piece and balloon self-portraits that I’ve done. But it’s much more about mechanics and probably closer to a piece I did that synthesized voice using really primitive methods. Emoter uses the expressions of the face that are so cued into reading the face. I took a picture of myself and cut the features up into little pieces, like a puzzle, and rearranged the features. And each time I did it, I created a different emotion, and that’s just something I read into it.
