Yesterday was… a journey ✨ Nine hours. Ten enamel pendants. One reel I attempted to film for the sake of staying relevant on IG (which is a whole other conversation). And basically everything that could go wrong did #livelaughlove Enameling is a big science project. Kiln temps, timing, layer order, chemical reactions on the fine silver, oil in the stains, washing between layers… if one variable misbehaves, the whole thing does. And trust me, they all misbehaved. But here’s the thing… even after years as a jeweler, stuff still goes wrong. Constantly. Problem-solving is basically 75% of the job. Yesterday’s solution? Wine. A generous pour. I must say that was pretty effective 🤌🏼 And then something wild happened—you all messaged me your own project disasters and how they still worked out in the end. It made me feel human again. And apparently… a lot of you actually liked how these turned out?! They have this unintentional antique vibe that I am absolutely claiming on purpose now. Torch fired enamel tips from the talented @tkiplinger - ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “When I first got into vitreous enameling, I used a torch to fire my enamel paintings because I did not have a kiln in my fledgling studio. Though I now have a kiln, I still prefer using a torch! If you want to get into enameling but don’t want to invest in a kiln, torch firing is a great way to get into it with little investment. Here are some tips if you’d like to give torch-firing a try.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1) Approach: Always fire from underneath the piece with even, gentle heat. For work holding during torch firing, I usually place the work on a trivet on top of a soldering tripod and screen; this makes it easy to position the torch under the piece. Any torch with a diffuse bushy flame will work for torch-firing enamels. I use a Sterno butane torch. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 2) Heat & Timing: Keep your torch moving to avoid warping and prevent the counter enamel from lumping and pulling in from the edges. To know when the enamel has fused, position a task light at an oblique angle during firing and watch the surface; remove the heat as soon as the surface turns glossy, which indicates it has fused.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 3) Size: I only torch fire pieces no larger than around 2.5”. I have found it difficult to generate an even heat on larger pieces. I almost forgot how much I love enameling! Traditionally done on copper or fine silver, tiny granules of colored glass get heated to melting in a kiln, or like I’m doing here with a torch, until you have a smooth and beautiful new surface. There are many insane and advanced techniques to enameling, and the Torch At The Bench method isn’t exactly the best of them, but I love the colors and textures the direct fire lends to the glass. This video is part of my series with @pmcsupplies to learn enameling with their Tabletop Kiln. I am not an expert, but rather a beginner! The coolest part of this is once I got the kiln it’s so easy to use I started experimenting right away! This month I’m working on transparent enamels. They can be tricky! You always want clear transparent enamel (the kind specific for silver) under your warm enamel colors (think pinks, yellows, oranges) cool colors like this green (and blues, teals etc) can usually be done without the base coat. It’s really easy to over fire sterling silver which can cause brown spots (copper oxides getting into the glass). Other general tips:⁣ ⁣ I like working on a baking sheet with a piece of tracing paper so I can easily return excess enamel to it’s jar. ⁣ ⁣ I bought a bunch of different trivets so I have options for each piece I’m enameling. Test them on the trivet before you apply your enamel :)⁣ ⁣ Expect the unexpected, enameling is super fun but you’re going to have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet here.⁣ ⁣ Let me know in the comments if there is any tutorials you want to see or if you have questions about this kiln. ✨ Pruebas de esmaltes: un paso clave ✨ Cuando no conozco la temperatura de un esmalte —o cuando son nuevos— siempre hago pruebas previas. Coloco todas las piezas juntas en el horno a una temperatura media (800 °C). Retiro la rejilla, saco las que ya fundieron y vuelvo a ingresar el resto para subir la temperatura. Repito el proceso a 820°C, 830 °C y así sucesivamente, hasta llegar a los últimos esmaltes (en este caso, 860 °C).
