1. Get out of your comfort zone and network. I’m an introvert, so it wasn’t easy—but the world runs on connections. If I can do it, you can absolutely do it too. The more you practice, the easier it gets. 2. Cold apply to internships. I applied to 100+ engineering internships from 2024-25 (mostly on LinkedIn) and got 1 offer—but that’s all it takes to change your life forever. Take advantage of free time during school breaks to boost your odds. 3. Career fairs matter. Skip long lines if needed and talk to smaller companies. Be genuine, learn from them, and always leave with contact info. 4. Leverage classmates & professors and build your LinkedIn early—those relationships open doors. 5. Don’t fear a long commute. I commute ~4 hours daily, it’s tough, but the experience is worth the sacrifice. Do it tired, do it motivated. • • • • #engineering #internship #college

I’m a 3.9 GPA Mechatronics Engineering student and most people make this degree way harder than it needs to be. Here are the 5 biggest wake-up calls I’ve had: save this and follow for more❤️ 1. It’s not all “Porsches and Mansions”💸 The “rich engineer” trope is a lie. You aren’t getting mansions and Ferraris fresh out of school. You’re getting a high-floor, stable, upper-middle-class life in the suburbs. It’s a great life, but if you’re here for “overnight wealth,” you’re in the wrong building. 2. Your “struggle” is a choice😓 Stop romanticizing how hard your classes are. The more you tell everyone “this is so hard,” the more you’re just pre-gaming your own failure. Complaining is just a cope for mediocrity. Other people mastered this material; you can too. Change your internal dialogue, and watch how much easier things get. 3. If you’re weak, you’re losing💪 You cannot build a high-performance brain on a low-performance body. Too many engineers look like they haven’t seen a gym in years. Don’t be that guy. If you aren’t pushing for a new PR in the gym, you aren’t reaching your peak cognitive performance in your classes. Physical discipline is the foundation of academic discipline. 4. All-nighters are for amateurs😴 Pulling an all-nighter isn’t a “grind”, it’s a failure of systems. It’s the least efficient way to work and it trains your brain to accept procrastination as a lifestyle. If you can’t manage a 24-hour day, you aren’t ready to manage a complex engineering project. Kill the cycle. 5. The “Golden Ticket” Degree👑 Just because you study Engineering doesn’t mean you have to be an Engineer. This is the most employable degree across all disciplines. Companies don’t just hire you for what you know; they hire you for the way you think. You’re taught how to solve complex problems and this is applicable to any field. Engineering is the ultimate foundation for any elite career path.

With AI disrupting industries left and right, is there a future for students going through engineering school right now? The data is in for the post-AI-disrupted world, and I'm breaking down which fields are still a good call for #engineeringstudents (and which aren't!) As always, the very best thing you can do for your education is to get as much student experience as possible before graduating. Start early and learn as much as you can along the way. Want help? Engineering advice I would give you if I wasn’t afraid of hurting your feelings: 1. Being “smart” is not enough. Engineering rewards consistency, not bursts of brilliance. The people who move up are the ones who show up prepared every single time. 2. If you don’t understand something, say it. Sitting quietly in meetings doesn’t make you look competent, it makes you invisible. Ask the question. Chances are three other people are confused too. 3. Your degree is just the entry ticket. The real learning starts on the job. No one cares what grade you got in Thermo five years from now. They care if you can solve problems today. 4. Communication will make or break your career. If you can’t explain your design clearly, it doesn’t matter how good it is. The engineers who rise fastest know how to speak to non-engineers. 5. Stop waiting to feel “ready.” You will never feel 100% qualified. Apply for the role. Lead the meeting. Volunteer for the stretch project. Growth is uncomfortable on purpose. 6. And lastly, no one is coming to manage your career for you. Not your boss. Not HR. You have to ask for raises, ask for responsibility, and track your wins. This isn’t harsh. It’s real. Engineering is an incredible career if you treat it like a skill you’re actively building, not just a title you earned. If you’re in STEM, I want you to win. But you have to take ownership. This is for educational purposes only. Always do your own research to decide what is right for you. (1) SolidWorks Associate Certification (CSWA): One of the most recognized entry-level CAD certifications for mechanical engineers. It tests your ability to build parts, assemblies, and basic simulations in SolidWorks. If your university provides access, you can often take it for free. It’s a great way to prove you can actually design, not just follow tutorials, and it signals to employers that you’re comfortable with industry-standard CAD tools. (2) Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate: Even in engineering, data is everywhere. This certification teaches you how to work with data using tools like Excel, SQL, and basic visualization platforms. It covers data cleaning, analysis, and interpretation, skills that apply across almost every engineering field. It’s beginner-friendly, relatively quick to complete, and shows you can go beyond purely technical work and actually make data-driven decisions. (3) Python for Engineering / Automation (Coursera or similar): Python is becoming a core skill in modern engineering, whether it’s for simulations, data analysis, or automating repetitive tasks. These courses typically cover fundamentals like scripting, working with libraries (NumPy, Pandas), and building small automation tools. It’s one of the highest leverage skills you can add early, especially if you want to move toward robotics, AI, or more technical roles. Personally, I’d prioritize CAD certifications like SolidWorks first as a mechanical engineer, then build from there depending on what direction you want to go in. #engineering #college
