A little structural engineering lesson! Jettying is where upper level walls are shifted out beyond the area of the floor below. Beams supporting these walls have to be cantilevered out past the lower level walls. When a structure utilizes jettying - a negative bending moment is created which causes the beam to bend upwards. The positive bending moment from regular floor load is counteracted by the negative moment from the wall supported at the end of the cantilever. This can drastically reduce the depth of beams needed for floor framing! (Yes I know this is technically not a propped cantilever - it’s more like a cantilever with a back span!) #lego #structuralengineering #brickgineer

Engineering advice I would give you if I wasn’t afraid of hurting your feelings: 1. Being “smart” is not enough. Engineering rewards consistency, not bursts of brilliance. The people who move up are the ones who show up prepared every single time. 2. If you don’t understand something, say it. Sitting quietly in meetings doesn’t make you look competent, it makes you invisible. Ask the question. Chances are three other people are confused too. 3. Your degree is just the entry ticket. The real learning starts on the job. No one cares what grade you got in Thermo five years from now. They care if you can solve problems today. 4. Communication will make or break your career. If you can’t explain your design clearly, it doesn’t matter how good it is. The engineers who rise fastest know how to speak to non-engineers. 5. Stop waiting to feel “ready.” You will never feel 100% qualified. Apply for the role. Lead the meeting. Volunteer for the stretch project. Growth is uncomfortable on purpose. 6. And lastly, no one is coming to manage your career for you. Not your boss. Not HR. You have to ask for raises, ask for responsibility, and track your wins. This isn’t harsh. It’s real. Engineering is an incredible career if you treat it like a skill you’re actively building, not just a title you earned. If you’re in STEM, I want you to win. But you have to take ownership. The D.i.h. Method can be used to solve any problem in engineering. It stands for “Decompose, Integrate, Harden” Decompose - Break the assignment into smaller, solvable parts. Identify what the problem is really asking, list given data, and outline constraints. This prevents overwhelm and clarifies where to start Integrate - Integrate the tools you’ve learned to solve the problems. Pull from notes or online references. This is where you make connections that solve the problems. Harden - This is where you turn your solution into a high fidelity solution. Check for units, check assumptions made. 1. Underestimating the the amount of time you will need to dedicate - You probably ARE smart enough to be an engineer, but you might not put enough time into it as you should and that’s why lots of freshmen struggle. You should be prepared to put in 50 hours a week of pure engineering, and sometimes more. It’s a huge transition when you first start but trust me, you will get used to it and it will become normal- 2. Never learning HOW to study. - Studying is a skill. You can’t just read about it and immediately be good at it. Learn about all the methods (Pomodoro, feynman technique, etc) and then go actually do them. Learning these methods is great, but the only way you will get better at it is by doing it for hours per day. So go practice - 3. Sacrificing their entire social life - Don’t get me wrong, there will be a portion of your social life that you will have to sacrifice to be successful in engineering. However, a ton of engineering students (and a lot of men in general) believe that in order to be successful at something, you should neglect building relationships with people and completely put the hoodie on. Maybe there is a time and place for staying low and grinding, but make sure you’re not spending your whole life by yourself because success rarely happens alone. - 4. Not focusing on their body like they do with their brain. - I’m sick of the unhealthy skinny engineer trope. Too many engineers think they’re too busy to go to the gym because they somehow also end up spending hours and hours of reels and clash royal. Go to the gym for 45 minutes a day, set goals, and treat it like you do your classes. You will feel a whole lot better. - 5. Telling themselves its too hard - Yes engineering gets tough, but the more you tell yourself that it’s hard, the more excuses you give yourself to fail. Instead, tell yourself that because other people have done it, you can too.
