The internet had me convinced that equal parenting was the only way to do it right. But I’ve come to realize—it doesn’t have to be We don’t do “equal parenting,” but we’ve found a way that works for us, and that’s really what matters. For the most part, I handle the day-to-day parenting—keeping track of our child’s routine, emotional well-being, school, and activities. Meanwhile, my husband takes on most of the financial responsibilities. It’s not split 50/50, but honestly, it doesn’t need to be. We’ve found our groove as a family, and we respect the roles we each play. I have realised, parenting doesn’t have to be split perfectly down the middle to work. What’s important is finding a system that keeps your family happy and healthy, even if it looks different from others. There are some things we do share equally—like bedtime, planning vacations, 1:1 connection time with our child, and talking through big decisions—but we’ve come to realize that our roles naturally shift as life changes. That’s the beauty of parenting—it’s always evolving. What works today may change as our child grows, and we’re open to that. When the mother talks ill of the dad, the child pays the price. It doesn’t always sound obvious. Sometimes it’s small, cutting remarks like: “Your dad never cared enough.” “If he really loved you, he’d be here.” “I don’t know why you even bother with him.” Other times, it’s guilt trips, sighs, or cold silence when the child mentions their father. Little by little, the child learns: Loving Dad makes Mom unhappy. This is called parental alienation—and it’s a form of emotional abuse. The mother isn’t just attacking the father; she’s tearing apart the child’s sense of safety, identity, and belonging. A child should never feel like they have to “choose” between parents. A child should never carry the burden of adult conflict. And a child should never be manipulated into rejecting love that rightfully belongs to them. Talking badly about the other parent doesn’t just hurt the dad—it scars the child. Healthy co-parenting lifts the child up. Toxic co-parenting uses them as a weapon.
