PSA: I am a fraud. (/s) . Contrary to the popular belief amongst friends, acquaintances, and coffee shop patrons who happen upon my ever-growing TBR pile weighing down my desk/bag/arms, I am not a ‘prolific’ reader ! I only finished 9 books last year, and I own well over 600 (my last count was over a year ago). . Of course, reading is not about finishing books or ticking off a list, but I often feel overwhelmed when I see bios with ‘📚 65/50’, or get into a slump when I keep switching between books without being able to switch one over to my ‘read’ shelf. . So, if you are like me and 1. make yourself feel bad for not finishing books, 2. fall into reading slumps easily, or 3. become easily overwhelmed when deciding what to read next because there are so many options and how can you choose just one, Here are some reads for you ! ☘️ 1. Notes to Self: Essays by Emilie Pine 2. The Two Kinds of Decay by Sarah Manguso 3. 300 Arguments: Essays by Sarah Manguso 4. Ongoingness: The End of a Diary by Sarah Manguso 5. The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson 6. Bluets by Maggie Nelson 7. Shiner by Maggie Nelson 8. Collective Amnesia by Koleka Putuma ☘️ I’ve reviewed these in my nonfiction issue of ‘Short Reads for ‘Short’ Attention Spans’ on Substack already (and they also have accompanying songs because I am a playlist baby). The fiction issue is scheduled for release this week, so if you want to get short fiction recommendations sent straight to your inbox, subscribe @ the link in my bio :) (P. S. The idea of a ‘short attention span’ as an immutable experience is über reductive; I’m just using it here because it’s ✨catchy✨)

Mosab Abu Toha is a Palestinian poet, essayist, and founder of the Edward Said Library in Gaza. His writing offers firsthand accounts of life under siege and has appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. In this interview with Democracy Now, Abu Toha reflects on the death of his friend and fellow writer Refaat Alareer, followed by the loss of Alareer’s daughter, son-in-law, and infant grandson. He describes the scale of destruction not just as individual but generational, where whole bloodlines—parents, children, grandchildren—are erased together. * * * #history #poetry #conflict #generations Full Interview: https://youtu.be/K7rlZZ6mz8M?si=bXpxqWn6YoVTBoKw

Alice Walker (b. 1944) is an acclaimed writer, best known for her novel The Color Purple (1982), which won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Her works explore themes of racism, sexism, identity, and resilience, often highlighting the struggles of Black women in the American South. Walker’s writing blends deep emotional storytelling with activism. The Color Purple, later adapted into a film and Broadway musical, follows Celie, an African American woman overcoming abuse and oppression to find self-worth and independence. Beyond fiction, Walker is a poet, essayist, and activist, advocating for civil rights, gender equality, and environmental justice. Her legacy is one of fearless storytelling—giving voice to marginalized communities and inspiring readers to confront injustice while embracing hope and self-discovery.
