I’ve worked as a staffer and freelancer at media brands you know and read. The drib-drab method of layoff is smart from an optics perspective because it doesn’t generate big headlines. Meanwhile, what’s happening on the backend, which the reader can’t see, is this: Everyone (writers, editors, designers, photo editors, video editors, social editors) are being asked to do more with less. An Art desk, for example, may have started with 5 designers but now has 2. Those 2 designers have to pick up all the work their laid-off coworkers had. Often they’ll also have to take on assignments from a sister publication at the company. It usually comes with no pay increase or a very meager one. Editing—a crucial part of journalism and story making—is considered extraneous and a waste of time. (Believe me, you do not want to read copy that has not been edited, by anyone.) There is no time to mentor curious, green staffers. There is no time (or desire) to build morale. Think about it this way: The magazine and websites you were reading 10 years ago have just as much content—if not more—today but way fewer people creating it. The price is employee burnout and quality. Staffers are slowly dying inside but hanging on for dear life because there are no jobs, they need the paycheck and insurance, and they still enjoy what they do despite all the grossness. AI is clearly the endgame for a lot of companies. They’ll get what they can from employees in the meantime, then try to move all the work over to one robot, who will turn out error-riddled copy but no one will care. The buzzy, glamorous picture of media you were sold in rom-coms and TV is not real. Step inside any media office today and what you will find is a shockingly tiny team of people worked to the brink, doing jobs they were not hired or trained to do, but still trying.
