Dawkins’ Selfish Gene has been hugely influential, both within evolutionary biology and in the wider public sphere. It’s a beautifully simple story: genes and not organisms drive evolutionary change. But critics argue the story is simplistic. The effect of a gene is not always the same and as is dependent on its host and the cell environment. DNA does not come neatly divided into individual genes. And in 2010 the renowned biologist EO Wilson and others revived the case for group selection. 1. Ingroup/Outgroup Psychology Humans have a tendency to view other group as a threat, even though they are also humans. People divide themselves into categories like “men vs. women” which escalates conflict instead of cooperation. 2. Xenophobia-Like Response to Change Rapid shifts in gender roles (e.g. women entering the workforce) trigger a fear-based reaction. 3. Exploitation by Influencers and Algorithms Just like politicians, many influencers exploit fear and outrage for views, likes, and profit. Polarizing content (e.g., “all men are trash” vs. “modern women are entitled”) spreads faster than nuance. 4. Lack of Humanistic Thinking Humanism promotes empathy, respect, and collaboration between all people—regardless of gender. Without it, people reduce each other to stereotypes or enemies, rather than seeing individuals. 5. Decline in Education and Dialogue Critical thinking, emotional literacy, and respectful debate aren’t widely taught.
