Exclusion is bullying for people who want to look innocent. Because nothing is technically wrong. No one yells at you. No one insults you. No one admits anything. They just… move differently. They “forget” to invite you, but somehow invite others. They bring up events you weren’t included in like it’s normal. They’re warm with you in private, but distant or avoidant in certain spaces. They include third parties in ways that make you feel replaced, compared, or quietly pushed out. They shift how others see you,so people who were once friendly start acting different, and you’re left wondering why. That’s how Relational aggression works. It’s not loud. It’s strategic. And it always comes with an excuse: “It wasn’t intentional.” “It just happened.” “You’re overthinking it.” But patterns don’t lie. If you feel consistently excluded, sidelined, or like your presence is being minimized… that’s not a coincidence. They were so aware. “Everyone wearing the outfit except you.” “Standing in the group and nobody acknowledges you.” “They say ‘we’ and you realize you’re not part of the we.” “Pretending you understand the social media references so you don’t look needy. When you try to change the conversation, you get ignored.” “They include you around adults…then ignore you every other time. Then say…. ‘What… we included her.’ 🙄” This is relational aggression. It is quiet and goes unnoticed by adults. It’s eye contact. Inside jokes. Seats being saved for someone else. The pause before someone answers you. Being tolerated instead of welcomed. The girls who grow into strong high schoolers…the girls who stop crumbling every time someone doesn’t choose them…the girls who can walk into a room and still know who they are usually learned it here. The Pattern Mean Girls Follow When Pushing Someone Out of the Group After fast bonding with promise of future plans, trips, and traditions where you’re made to feel chosen a subtle shift happens. The shift often starts with just one person once insecurity, comparison, or perceived threat is activated so distance becomes the solution for them. Quiet withdrawal follows: fewer invites, fewer messages, energy changes, & plans happen without you. Nothing is said, you’re just no longer included. When connection feels competitive, exclusion feels safer than sharing space. There’s rarely a clear conflict, which is what makes this so destabilizing. You replay conversations and try to fix what was never discussed. And when there is conflict, it’s often avoided rather than repaired. Speak up and you’re the problem. Stay quiet and the exclusion continues. Group compliance follows. People go along to protect their place. Silence feels safer than speaking up. You’re eventually out & it’s reframed as “natural drift,” even though it never was. But here’s what most people miss, the cycle doesn’t end with you. The discomfort shifts, someone else is phased out, and someone new is pulled in. Same pattern just a different person. But turning up wearing ill-fitting kids clothes is hardly dignified or empowering is it? Why is this my only option? I’m a broadcaster, consultant and entrepreneur. I should feel confident to turn up to places in clothes that I can easily access. Why do dogs have more clothing options than me?
