🧪 Lactic Acid is an AHA on the gentler side so if exfoliants like Retinol or Glycolic Acid irritated your skin or if you have sensitive skin, Lactic Acid is a great alternative. The most unique aspect of Lactic Acid is that it’s also considered a humectant since its molecular structure can attract and bind water molecules which hydrates the skin. OTC Lactic Acid ranges from 5-10% so choose your strength based on how your sensitive your skin is. Hey fellow derms - is it just me or is everyone over exfoliating? Non-derms, don't get it twisted, proper exfoliation can do a lot of good for your skin, but it can also do worse things in the long run if not done properly. So, how do you know if you're overexfoliating? You won't be able to miss the signs. Besides redness and irritation you may also experience swelling, puffiness, sudden acne inflammation, peeling and/or flakiness.   That said, there's an easy way to avoid this... Stop using a physical exfoliator! They're too harsh on the skin. Instead use a simple chemical exfoliant - like a glycolic acid - 2x a week (at most!). BHA is lipophilic, which means it is attracted to oil. It cleans out the excess oil and sebum from the skin. Best advised for oily / comedonal acne skin. 2) AHA ( Alpha Hydroxy Acids) : AHA s like glycolic acid , lactic acid are hydrophilic, which means they are attracted to water. This allows them to lock in moisture onto your skin. Best suited for dry, ageing and pigmented skin. 3) PHA ( Poly Hydroxy Acids ) : PHAs like lactobionic acid , glucanolactone does not penetrate the skin as fast as AHA.
