Physicist Brian Greene demonstrates what weightlessness really means using a simple free-fall experiment. A bottle with holes is dropped, and the streams of water behave in a surprising way. Gravity hasn’t disappeared. Instead, the bottle and the water inside are falling together, which removes the sensation of weight. Gravity is still acting on everything, including the water outside the bottle, but because all the objects are accelerating at the same rate, they appear weightless relative to each other. This is the same reason astronauts feel weightless in orbit, even though Earth’s gravity is still pulling on them. Understanding this effect is more than a classroom curiosity. Research into microgravity helps scientists study fluid behavior, protect bone density, and design systems for long-duration space missions.

As Professor David Tong explains, this expression is essentially the entire known physics of the universe written in a single compact form. It combines Einstein’s description of gravity with the quantum fields that account for the electromagnetic force, the strong force, and the weak force. Alongside these forces, it also includes the fields that represent all matter particles quarks, electrons, neutrinos and the Higgs field that gives those particles mass. The structure tells us to consider every possible way these fields can exist throughout space and time, and then determine how nature behaves by averaging over all those possibilities.
