‘COALESCENCE’ - SAINSBURY CENTRE Previously on display at @sainsburycentre, ‘Coalescence’ – composed of anthracite, excavated from one of the UK’s last remaining coal mines – hangs above Alberto Giacometti’s ‘Standing Woman’ (1948). The works formed part of the exhibition, ‘Sediment Spirit’, bringing together interactive artworks from 1960s to present day considering human-made climate change. @new_contemporaries, the UK’s leading platform for emerging artists, opens @southlondongallery in 2026. Founded in 1949 by artists for artists, New Contemporaries has long championed early-career talent who go on to shape contemporary art. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, installation, photography and moving image, exploring themes of climate change, power, identity, memory, and our relationship with the environment, technology, and other species. This year, 26 artists have been selected by Pio Abad, Louise Giovanelli and Grace Ndiritu to present work in the exhibition. The participating artists are Viviana Almas, Kat Anderson, Hadas Auerbach, Timon Benson, Lakshya Bhargava, William Braithwaite, River Yuhao Cao, Ali Cook, Shaun Doyle, Ally Fallon, Samantha Fellows, Alia Gargum, Oliver Getley, Makiko Harris, Manuel Alejandro Hernandez Rivera, Deborah Lerner, Gregor Petrikovič, Will Pham, Isobel Shore, Maya Silverberg, Aaron Alexander Smyth, Christopher Steenson, Varvara Uhlik, Eliza Wagener, Benjamin Waters, and Yimin Xiang. In one room of my exhibition at Visual Carlow ‘Interloper’ is installed with an ‘energy field’ drawing of earth, a branch cast in bronze stands vertically to one side. Lighting overhead is programmed to dim and brighten in response to meteorological data. #annehardy @visual_carlow

Subject / Object is an intensive, hands-on program grounded in the belief that materials, experimentation, and problem-solving are not secondary to ideas—they are central to how meaning and artistic language come into being. Throughout history, artists have advanced their work by rethinking materials and supports in ways inseparable from who they were and what they needed to express. From the leading 16th century painter Agnolo Bronzino adding glass to deepen and intensify his blacks, to Jackson Pollock’s 20th century revolution pouring Duco enamel onto raw canvas to defy gravity and extend pictorial space, to Judy Pfaff using neon in the manner of a painter, holding and sharing light—internally and externally—artists across centuries have pushed their work forward by rethinking materials and supports in ways that were inseparable from who they were and what they needed to express. Again and again, singular practices evolve through the relationship between subject who you are, what you’re wrestling with, why you make and object—how the work is built, what it’s made of, how it behaves. That relationship is not optional; it is often what enables the next step. Rather than treating process and technique as secondary to ideas, the program treats them as active forces shaping the work itself. Participants are encouraged to move through uncertainty, test ideas through making, and allow discovery to redirect intention. Thinking and making develop together, with the goal of work that is both conceptually grounded and materially resolved. The program is anchored by mentorship focusing on how technical solutions emerge from conceptual needs, the productive role of experimentation and failure, and translating process into clear visual language. Michael and Daniel and additional guest mentors provide focused critiques, share the evolution of their practices, and engage in open discussion around contemporary practice and professional life. An additional central component of the program is an onsite studio visit with Judy Pfaff, offering participants the opportunity to observe how ideas, materials, and decisions unfold within a living practice.
