Try this simple way to speak clearly. 💬 In this clip I’m working with a child diagnosed with a “receptive language delay” - this child does not have an ASD diagnosis. 🤗 You can hear the excitement in his voice when he paired his WORD with the ACTION! 📉 Echolalia is a typical part of speech and language development, peaking between 27-30 months and then declining until 36 months. 🫶 Beyond 3 years, continued echolalia may indicate receptive language delays or suggest the child could be a Gestalt Language Processor (GLP) **💡To pair meaning with words at home, try offering non-preferred options to your child LAST (example: “want cookie? Or tomato?”) when they say “tomato,” simply hand them the tomato! Repeat it again. If your child becomes frustrated, just model for them, “OHHH! Cookie! How I target early expressive language skills in 9-15 month olds, and you might already be doing it! Imitate back what they say! Why this easy exercise is so helpful: Responding to baby’s sounds with your own sounds and words help them understand that communication is a two-way street. Interactions like these activate the language centers in the baby’s brain. When you respond to your baby’s sounds, you’re showing them that their communication is valued and that they are heard. Want to transform your communication skills? Start with this self-awareness exercise. Record yourself speaking for 5 minutes on any topic. Leave it for a day (this removes the initial self-criticism). Then review it in three stages: Stage 1: Watch on mute Focus purely on body language. What are your hands doing? How do your facial expressions support your message? Notice your posture and movement patterns. Stage 2: Listen without watching Turn the phone around and just listen. Pay attention to vocal qualities: your pace, volume, tone variations, and energy levels. What do you like? What needs work? Stage 3: Get it transcribed This reveals your communication patterns in black and white. You'll spot repetition, circular reasoning, filler words, and structural issues you never noticed before.
