Here is the simplest way to remember it forever. Think of your favourite chocolate bar. The first one? Amazing. By the fifth bar you cannot look at another piece of chocolate. Your benefit was decreasing with every additional bar. That is exactly what marginal benefit is. Because it decreases as quantity increases, it is downward sloping. Which means marginal cost must simply be upward sloping. Get those curves the wrong way around on your externality diagram and you drop marks instantly regardless of how good the rest of your answer is.
