The Mast Tree (Polyalthia longifolia), also called Indian Mast Tree, Ashoka Tree, or False Ashoka, is a tall, evergreen tree native to India and Sri Lanka. #sunsetgardensgreen . . #miami #gardencenter #ashokatree

You’ll find the false Ashoka in most every Indian city. Here’s what I could gather about this common tree. What is it called in your town or state? Have you seen any creature feed in on it? Did you play with the seeds as a kid? I’m curious to know about your interactions with this tree. The Monoon longifolium is also called the Polyalthia longifolia (an old name). Thank you for the love you showed my previous video. It’s my pleasure to bring you the second installment of my series: About a Tree #aboutatree #urbangarden #urbanwildlife #seasonwatch #treesofindia #treesofbangalore #treesofindia @efloraofindia @seasonwatch.in @trees_ofindia

The Ashoka tree (Saraca asoca) is a beautiful, evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent, prized for its lush foliage, fragrant flowers, and cultural significance, often planted for ornamental, medicinal, and symbolic purposes. It's known for its clusters of vibrant orange-red flowers that bloom in spring, and its bark and leaves have uses in traditional medicine, particularly for gynecological issues. It thrives in well-drained soil, partial shade to full sun, and moderate watering, growing to a height of 6-9 meters. Key Characteristics Appearance: A slender, slow-growing evergreen with deep green leaves and dense clusters of flowers. Flowers: Yellow when young, turning orange and then crimson with age, blooming in heavy bunches. Height: Typically grows 6 to 9 meters tall. Fruit: A woody pod that is 6 to 10 inches long, containing 6-8 seeds. Growing Conditions Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Soil: Well-drained, organic soil is ideal. Watering: Keep soil moist, allowing the top inch to dry slightly between waterings; reduce watering in winter. Uses & Significance Ornamental: Used in landscaping for its beauty, as a privacy screen, or as a lawn tree. Medicinal: Bark is used in traditional medicine, especially for gynecological problems. Cultural: Revered in Indian culture and ancient texts, symbolizing love, fertility, and the triumph of good over evil. Note on "False Ashoka" The taller, slender tree often called "Ashoka" (Polyalthia longifolia) is botanically different from the Saraca asoca (Sita Ashoka) but is also used ornamentally and medicinally.

Saraca asoca The plant showcased is Saraca asoca. A member of the Fabaceae family. It's famously associated with the Ramayana, where it's believed to be the same tree under which Sita mata, the consort of Lord Rama, stayed in Lanka. The abundance of Ashoka trees in that location led to its name as Ashoka Vatika. It is associated with Kamadeva, the god of love. It's also believed that Gautama Buddha was born under this tree. There's often confusion between the Asopalav (false ashoka) and this tree, but the real Ashoka tree is this one. So, when engaging in plantation activities, it's advisable to choose native species like this plant over exotic ones. It finds extensive use in various medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy. It's particularly renowned for treating gynaecological disorders, skin infections, central nervous system (CNS) disorders and urinary infections. Moreover, it possesses anti-cancer, anti-menorrhagic, anti-microbial and anti-diabetic properties. Propagation of this plant can be done through seeds. #IndianMythology #SaracaAsoca #AshokaTree #Fabaceae #AshokaVatika #GautamaBuddha #MedicinalPlants #Ayurveda #NaturalRemedies #IndigenousPlants #HerbalHealing #NativeSpecies #HealthAndWellness #NatureFacts
