Caltech physicists have created the largest qubit array ever assembled: 6,100 neutral-atom qubits trapped in a grid by lasers. This milestone comes amid a rapidly growing race to scale up quantum computers. There are several approaches in development, including those based on superconducting circuits, trapped ions, and neutral atoms, as used in the new study. “This is an exciting moment for neutral-atom quantum computing,” says Manuel Endres, professor of physics at Caltech. “We can now see a pathway to large error-corrected quantum computers. The building blocks are in place.” Endres is the principal investigator of the research published today in Nature. Three Caltech graduate students led the study: Hannah Manetsch, Gyohei Nomura, and Elie Bataille. In this video, Manetsch gives a quick tour of the experiment and describes how the team used optical tweezers — highly focused laser beams — to trap thousands of individual cesium atoms in a grid.

Microsoft just made a massive breakthrough that will change
98,566

Microsoft just made a massive breakthrough that will change technology forever. It’s called the Majorana 1, a quantum chip that’s the first of its kind in quantum computing. And what this thing can do is absolutely insane. Imagine a world where you could invent concrete that could heal itself. Or you could design a phone battery that could be charged one time, and then never run out of juice. That sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. This chip is gonna make it possible with quantum computing. Here’s how quantum computing works (ELI5). Imagine the process to invent the material for an infinite battery was actually a giant maze. If you solve the maze, you invent the formula for a new battery technology. A normal computer would have to try every single pathway in the maze, one at a time. And it could take centuries to find the right path all the way through. But a quantum computer works differently, because it can try every single path in the maze at the same time. This is essentially the difference between a bit and a qubit (the quantum bits that power quantum computers) Now this new Majorana chip has an architecture that can sustain up to 1 million qubits at the same time. That’s 1 million different pathways through the maze, every moment, until it’s solved. And what this means, is pretty incredible. When a scientist goes into a lab to create a material or a design new drug, they won’t need to run experiments. Because this chip will just give them the right answer the very first time. And It’s hard to wrap your head around what this means, but essentially, it’s new medicines, new iPhone screens that can never crack, new metals for planes that fly at supersonic speeds. Everything will change because of quantum computers. And we just entered the Quantum Era. 💫 Beyond 1s and 0s. Welcome to the quantum realm. A quantum computer isn't just a faster PC. It's a new type of machine that uses the wild rules of quantum physics (like superposition & entanglement) to solve problems impossible for today's supercomputers. 🔍 What could it solve? • Designing new life-saving medicines • Creating ultra-efficient batteries & materials • Unlocking secrets of the universe itself But... there's a flip side. Its power could one day break the digital locks (encryption) that protect our online world. The race for quantum supremacy is on, and the future is being built now. #QuantumComputing #TechOfTomorrow #FutureIsQuantum #Physics #Technology #Innovation #Science

April 1st - my grandma’s bday. Dedicating this reel to her. She doesn’t have smartphone w internet, so I can’t call from Brasil to Russia. Happy birthday, grandma, babushka, 74yo she turns today 🥳 The CNOT (Controlled-NOT) gate is a fundamental two-qubit gate in quantum computing. It flips (applies an X gate to) the target qubit if and only if the control qubit is in the state |1⟩. In matrix form, as I presented. CNOT is crucial because, together with single-qubit gates, it forms a universal set — any quantum computation can be built from them. The CNOT gate was introduced in the early formulations of quantum logic circuits in the 1990s, notably in the work of Barenco, Deutsch, and others. It mirrors classical reversible computing (like the XOR gate) but operates coherently on superpositions — enabling entanglement. Applications • Entanglement creation: Applying CNOT after a Hadamard on the control qubit generates a Bell state. • Quantum algorithms: Used in circuits for Shor’s algorithm, Grover’s search, quantum error correction, etc. • Quantum teleportation and communication: Core component of transferring quantum information. Hardware Realization: Cold Neutral Atoms In cold neutral atom systems, atoms (like Rb or Cs) are trapped in optical tweezers or lattices and manipulated with lasers. To implement a CNOT: 1. Qubit encoding: The |0⟩ and |1⟩ states are stored in hyperfine levels of an atom. 2. Control mechanism: Use Rydberg blockade — when one atom is excited to a Rydberg state, it shifts the energy levels of nearby atoms, preventing their excitation. 3. Gate sequence: A typical CNOT involves: • Exciting the control qubit to a Rydberg state (if it’s |1⟩). • Applying a conditional rotation (e.g., X) on the target qubit depending on the presence or absence of blockade. • De-exciting the control qubit. This Rydberg-mediated interaction enables fast, high-fidelity two-qubit gates suitable for scalable quantum systems. #fyp #science #physics #theoreticalphysicist #quantumphysics #theoreticalphysics #quantum #math #quantummechanics #quantumcomputing #womenintech #womeninstem #victoriaporozova #vquantpost
