➡️ A febrile seizure is a seizure that happens when your child has a fever (temperature of 100.4°F/38°C or higher). ➡️ between 6 months and 5 years of age ➡️Febrile seizures are NOT caused by epilepsy or brain infections. ➡️ Febrile seizures happen when a child’s developing brain is stressed by fever, usually during common viral illnesses like colds, flu, or ear infections What Do Febrile Seizures Look Like? - MOST Last less than 15 minutes (usually 1-2 minutes) - Involve the whole body (generalized shaking or stiffening) - Happen only once during the illness - Are followed by your child returning to normal A “complex” febrile seizure lasts longer than 15 minutes, affects only one part of the body, or happens more than once within 24 hours. What Should You Do During a Seizure? -Stay calm and follow these steps: -Place your child on their side on a safe surface (floor or bed) to prevent choking if they vomit -Remove any nearby objects that could cause injury -Do NOT restrain your child or try to stop the shaking movements -Do NOT put anything in your child’s mouth (they cannot swallow their tongue) -Time the seizure - note when it starts and ends *this mom is not wrong for videoing the event. In fact, it helps time the event and help the team discern whether simple vs complex etc. (which matters for the workup) -Stay with your child until the seizure ends and they are fully awake Call 911 or seek emergency care if: - The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes - Your child has trouble breathing - Your child has multiple seizures in a row - Your child is injured during the seizure - Your child does not return to normal after the seizure - This is your child’s first seizure - Your child is younger than 6 months or older than 5 years Giving fever-reducing medicines can help your child feel more comfortable, but these meds do NOT prevent febrile seizures.
