Another day of cleaning the green algae.#fishkeeping #aquarium #aquariumshop #reelinstagram❤️ #fishkeeper #plantedtank #dropshipping #aquariumproducts

These two are just single-celled organisms; basically a bunch of building blocks and cell machinery wrapped in a membrane, and here you can see what happens when that membrane bursts and spills its contents out. . The smaller organism, Holophrya, has harpoon-like structures around its cell mouth that are expelled to immobilize prey. They usually go after smaller microorganisms or decomposing organic matter, so this whole scene was so unexpected my jaw was on the floor. . When I found these two, Holophrya’s little harpoons had already fired and pierced the cell membrane of the larger organism, a Stentor, and it was tugging on the Stentor’s membrane. After a few seconds, the membrane popped almost like a balloon, and the Stentor’s cell contents spilled into the environment for Holophrya to feed on. . Holophrya has sensory mechanisms that let it detect the chemical signals coming from the spilled contents of the Stentor. So it kept swimming around for minutes, swallowing all the soup-like cytoplasm droplets and solid chunks of organelles, and even the bits of lunch Stentor had earlier. . While Holophrya was feeding on its spilled “guts,” the Stentor was busy repairing the hole in its membrane. Although it lost a lot of cell mass, Stentor has the ability to recover from all this and regenerate its deformed cell back to normal like nothing has happened. I wish I had that skill of regenerating emotionally, I’m like a savant of sad memories and broken cell membranes. 😂 . Thank you for reading! I’ll share a three-minute clip of this on my exclusive pages so you can watch the Holophrya keep feeding on the bits while the Stentor continues to repair itself. Your support makes it possible for me to keep posting, and I appreciate it. . Best, James Weiss

I missed my opportunity to post this bleeding algae on Halloween (it’s unfortunately not actually bleeding)! I found some interesting dark globs of Cyanobacteria growing on the air tube in my stock tank. These globs were shiny and nearly black…until you crushed them. Then they released a deep red pigment. There wasn’t much living inside those mats, but the life on and around them kept me busy: Lacrymaria, Stentor, Dileptus, a few flagellates I didn’t bother trying to identify because I know my limits, some Euglenoids, and a rotifer from the family Notommatidae. It’s one of those samples that reminds me why I love microscopy. 🔬 Olympus BX51 w/ DIC from @mundaymicroscope 🎥 iPhone 14

🌊🔬 Say hello to one of nature’s tiniest powerhouses! These amazing aquatic insect larvae are super eaters of filamentous algae, detritus, and microbial films. 🦠💚 They thrive in low-oxygen microzones—the same spots where cyanobacteria love to grow! 😮💥 Why are they so cool? ✨ They turn microalgal biomass into protein-rich goodness ✨ They tolerate wide temperature and water-quality ranges ✨ Fish larvae naturally love to snack on them 🐟💚 ✨ And imagine them devouring all your geosmin-producing cyanobacteria in an aquaculture system! 😂🔄 Seriously… nature’s cleanup crew deserves more hype. 🦾🌍 #aquaticinsect #aquaculture #cyanobacteria #microbialecology #naturalbiocontrol #ecoscience #waterquality #microlife #sciencefun #naturefacts Credit to @tardibabe thank you for this video!

Microalgae may be small, but they pack a big environmental punch! These plant-like microorganisms form the basis for most food chains and effectively combat invasive plants and significantly contribute to water purification.

I just wanted to make a little video on a fascinating species that many people that keep saltwater aquariums have definitely encountered without a second thought. Bubble algae can certainly be a nuisance for many, but I think it should be acknowledged the absolute absurdity of the size of this species for only being a single cell. When I first learned about bubble algae in college, it seemed like something from the depths, then I saw it at home and had to completely recontextulize my thinking about the world and the critters we keep around us. The fact that such a marvel of evolution is sitting right under our noses without appreciation is unfortunate, but hopefully I can change even one persons opinion on this weird little algae. EDIT: I have been alerted of a few species of larger unicellular organisms so i’m pinning the comment :) Did you know this about bubble algae? #nudibranch #crab #biology #ocean #education #learning #creator #photography #videography #shrimp #goby #coral #fish #swag #marine #bruh #meme #snail #slug #starfish #jellyfish #worm

Volvox a type of green algae found in fresh water and are made up of hundreds to thousands of cells that take the shape of a sphere which is why they are also sometimes called globe algae. Each green speck is an individual cell with a pair of flagella that it uses in unison to swim and they are all held in position through protoplasmic bridges which you can spot in the most zoomed in clip. Since I rarely get the chance to sample ponds this is my first time finding these beautiful Volvox. There is something so captivating about their movement and appearance.
