How many times have you heard a client say nails need to “breathe”? 😅 Let's clarify this using actual nail science👇 Natural nails don’t need air. Once the nail plate grows out of the matrix, it’s made of dead keratin cells - there’s no oxygen exchange happening on the surface. What actually affects nail health: • Proper prep and adhesion • Preventing moisture from getting trapped under enhancements • Catching lifting early • Understanding where infections really start Most nail infections don’t start on top of the nail. They develop underneath - usually from moisture, lifting, or improper removal. This is why technique, structure, and removal matter more than “letting nails breathe.” Helpful context to keep in mind for client conversations behind the table. 💅

Overfiling isn’t a minor mistake. It weakens the natural nail plate, compromises structural integrity, and increases the risk of lifting, splitting, and long-term damage. The natural nail does not need to be aggressively thinned to achieve retention. In fact, excessive filing often causes the very problems techs are trying to avoid. The key rule is to work with the very tip of the scissors. Using the full blade reduces control and increases the risk of injury. Over-trimming is one of the most common mistakes. With adhered cuticle, capillaries sit very close to the surface, so removing too much can easily cause bleeding. Another critical area is the center of the thumb. There is no deep pocket in this zone. Going too deep with scissors often leads to trauma. Trimming here must remain superficial and controlled.
