Final exams can be fun 😅 it’s the victory lap you deserve for putting in the time to study, applying the material that you learned in lecture to scenarios of your choice, and changing HOW you study when required in order to foster success later. Exams aren’t the perfect measure of student success, hence why points from class writings, discussion, and (importantly for STEM and Premeds) lab projects make up a substantial percent of your final grade. Exams are hard because Biology is hard, no way around it. We also want to prepare you to succeed at the next level where you’ll be up against the elite (that, and you may be prepping for the MCAT, DAT, or OAT). There are two key layers each of my exams tries to build: 1) Questions that you MUST know after taking the class. There are certain expectations from foundational classes like Genetics that are simply too important not to focus on. These can often feel too easy for those that have studied heavily, especially when presented as multiple choice. For example, you simply must know DNA ➡️ RNA ➡️ Protein… 2) Free-response questions capable of addressing higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and applying material in a 3-dimensional fashion. Too few assessments in Biology address the core needs outlined in NSF’s Vision and Change call to action for college Biology. Assessments where students can showcase talents in data and information evaluation, planning investigations, applying what they know to novel scenarios, and asking follow-up questions are needed now more than ever (Uminski & Couch 2024). I’m happy that my exams provide a large note sheet for students so that these questions are fair game (and because it eases test anxiety). As I often remind them before we begin: “we’ll be fine”. Good luck to everyone taking your final university semester exams 🍀 we want you to do well, otherwise why would we put all those extra hours into teaching?

Exams are over, and it’s time to prioritize YOU! Here are some tips to recharge and take care of your well-being: 🎉 1. Celebrate your accomplishments Take a moment to recognize all the effort you’ve put in.Treat yourself, whether it’s a nice meal, a movie, or a fun outing. 😴 2. Get quality sleep Exams can throw your sleep schedule off. Now is the time to rest and restore—aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. 🏃♀️ 3. Move your body Go for a walk, to the different classes ACLO offers, or do a workout that you enjoy. 📴 4. Take a digital detox Put away your devices for a bit and reconnect with yourself, nature, or loved ones even though the weather is cold, a little break from screens can do wonders. 🗓️ 5. Plan ahead lightly Start thinking about the next semester with small, manageable goals.
