"Tech is a man's world." Really? Let's talk about that. The first computer programmer? A woman. Ada Lovelace, 1843. The algorithm that got humans to the moon? Written by Margaret Hamilton and her team of women. WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS technology? Thank Hedy Lamarr, a Hollywood actress who invented frequency hopping in her spare time. The first compiler for computer programming? Grace Hopper. But somehow we still hear "women aren't good at tech" or "it's always been a male industry." Bullshit. Women BUILT the foundation of the digital world we live in today. Men just took credit for it, wrote the history books, and convinced everyone they did it alone. The "tech bro" culture we see now? That's recent. Women were coding, programming, and innovating long before it became cool and profitable. Then suddenly when the money showed up, women got pushed out and erased from the narrative. Why this matters: 💻 Women built the basics - Every device you use today exists because of innovations women created. This was never "men's territory." 📚 History was rewritten - They literally removed women from tech history to make it seem like a male field. Don't fall for it. 👑 You belong here - If anyone tells you tech isn't for women, remind them who invented computer programming. It's not a man's world. It's OUR world. We just let them take credit. Ada Lovelace challenged the roles of women in the Victorian
3,493

Ada Lovelace challenged the roles of women in the Victorian era to become the world’s first computer programmer. Born 210 years ago as Augusta Ada Byron on December 10, 1815 in London, her educational reformer mother Annabella Milbanke left an unhappy marriage and created for her daughter a path different than living under the “madness” of her father, poet Lord Byron. She hired tutors to instruct in the fields of mathematics and science, and at a time when girls were not expected to study beyond the arts and languages, Ada was well read and proficient in arithmetic, geometry, and the works Euclid. She married William King in 1835, assuming the Countess of Lovelace title, and had three children, but remained committed to her work. She attended the University of London, advancing her studies to calculus, analytical geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and Bernoulli numbers. After learning of Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, the first mechanical general-purpose computer, she began her professional career when the inventor asked her to translate an article by Italian engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea. Her “Notes,” recorded from 1842-43, included an algorithm capable of creating extensive calculations. Lovelace detailed her findings on a complex machine able to encode numbers, letters, images, and sounds. Published under the pseudonym of “A.A.L.,” her paper was given only minimal attention, and not until its re-evaluation in 1953 was she widely cited as the first computer programmer in history. Soon after, she spent time gambling, believing that mathematical formulas could predict horse racing, but was proven false and faced some degree of debt. Her health declined after contacting cholera and other ailments, and she was prescribed painkillers and developed an addiction to alcohol. Deprived of focus, Lovelace abandoned her work and dealt with her husband’s abandonment. She was suffering from uterine cancer at the time of her death on November 27, 1852 at the age of 36. While she never experienced the extent of her value on the world, Lovelace is remembered for laying the foundation for modern machines and advancing the roles of women in STEM.
