Welcome to knitting 101: complete beginner For the chunky hat project you will learn: • how to cast on • knit & purl stitches • 1x1 ribbing • stockinette • decreasing stitches • weaving in ends • how to knit in the round • how to use a magic loop What you will need: • one ball of chunky weight yarn (check the label which should tell you which needle size it recommends, choose one that says US 10-11 or 6mm-8mm). As this is your first project you don’t need to invest in “good” yarn. Choose one that suits your budget and preferences. • one pair of US 11 or 8mm needles (I use Chiaogoo interchangeable needles but you can buy one pair with a long or short cord) if you choose a long cord you will need to use the magic loop method which will be explained in a video. • check second hand craft stores, thrift shops, buy nothing groups etc as chunky needles and yarn are often available there! If you’re in Denver check out @recreativedenver • a darning needle for weaving in ends • a stitch marker (you can make this out of string if you don’t want to buy one) I personally do not recommend straight needles, I haven’t used mine since I got them. No purls, no patterns, no drama (yet). 4. Keep it small: neckwarmers, headbands, dishcloths. Save the sweater dream for later. 5. YouTube is your new knitting BFF. Watch, pause, slow down, repeat. 6. My first knitting project! I’m in love with these two colors—definitely want to try more blue and light yellow from now on. Kinda gives off those spring vibes . Came up with this pattern myself, and it fits perfectly!
