This fishing knot was originally developed by Berkley to address a specific problem: clinch knots were slipping. Especially when used with modern monofilament lines. The solution? A double pass through the eye of the hook to increase friction and reduce failure under load. The standard Improved Trilene involves: Passing the line twice through the hook eye, Wrapping the tag end around the standing line 5 to 7 times, Then feeding the tag back through both loops before tightening. This structure creates more contact points and spreads tension more evenly, resulting in excellent strength retention—often 90–95% of the line’s rated strength when tied correctly. The improved version, aka the Toit Knot, is a simple but powerful variation. After completing the standard steps, the tag end is brought back around the large top loop above the hook eye, and wrapped 3 more times before final cinching. These extra wraps lock the knot down even tighter—especially effective with slick lines like fluorocarbon or braid.
