I am delighted to report that my Fitbit obsession has taken me to 365 days… A full calendar year where I have had over 10,000 steps per day! During that time I have lost roughly 6-7 pounds, increased my stamina while running and increased my stamina with lifting weights. Healthy lifestyle is some thing I preach all the time so I want to let my patients, followers, family, and friends, that I am trying my best to practice what I preach. I am totally obsessed with my little Fitbit, and everybody that knows me knows this! Can you trust smart watches? No. Not universally, anyway. Someone recently asked me if they can trust the calorie burn on their Apple Watch, and whilst I love my Apple Watch for some things, that’s not something I would trust it on. Smart watches and activity trackers can be pretty good at some things. Most of them can be pretty good at measuring your step count. For example, this recent very useful demonstration from @mkbhd showed four smart watches all measuring 1000 steps with fewer than 50 steps margin of error (<5%). But, this is a VERY controlled experiment that only includes walking. If I make a protein shake, my watch can register some steps even though I am standing still, because it mistakes my rapid hand movements for steps. I have been in long car journeys when my phone told me I hit my step goal, because it’s hard for devices to know what is a step and what is another form of movement. Where things tend to get increasingly messy? Calorie burn. A lot of research shows that when it comes to calorie burn, smart watches just are not consistently accurate. Not even close. Smart watches can be great. They often encourage people to do more activity (which can be a big YAY). Mine also lets me walkie talkie my friend across the world so I can try to wake him up in the middle of the night just for shits and giggles. Obviously that’s a yay as well. But, I would strongly discourage anyone from trusting the calorie burn numbers that they tell you because until technology improves, they cannot be reliably accurate on all of you all of the time.
