Permanent retainers will break with time. At least that’s been our experience… People usually want a permanent (or fixed) retainer after braces/Invisalign treatment because they don’t want to worry about their teeth moving or remembering to wear a removable retainer at night. But what if a permanent retainer is not permanent? And what if you still need a removable retainer EVEN IF you have a fixed retainer in place? Would you still want the permanent retainer anyway? Maybe you would. So, here’s what you should know… -Fixed retainers are just glued to your teeth. Usually, the wire is glued to your lower 6 front teeth, so it holds the front teeth together, but NOT the back teeth. And your back teeth can still move. -Because the wire is glued to multiple teeth, if the glue comes off of only one tooth, you might not feel the wire loose….because it’s not. But it’s technically broken. And you won’t know until the tooth that lost glue shifts out of position. And by the time you notice, it’s too late. And to move the tooth back into position you need braces or Invisalign again. -If the wire is bent because of something you ate, the wire can pull the teeth that it is connected to and yank them out of position. And sometimes, it can move a tooth root out of bone. Ask us how we know. -The wire is extremely hard to clean around, so plaque and bacteria build up around it. Hygienists don’t like them because it’s hard for them to clean around as well. And we’ve seen many hygienists break fixed retainers accidently while trying to remove the hard plaque that has built up on the wire. The cost to repair or replace the wire with your orthodontist is not cheap. And you have to pay for it, even though you didn’t break it. We have our patients wear a removable plastic retainer to sleep after their Invisalign treatment. This retainer holds their front and back teeth together and prevents them from shifting without all of the downsides and risks of “permanent retainers.”

Why You Should Almost Never Get A Permanent Retainer! In my opinion 😅 I will most definitely give someone one if they have severe spacing between the front teeth though 🙌🏻 - Make sure to check out our oral care company that gives back! @thesomethingniceco ❤️🦷🪥 more products coming soon! 👀 and waterflossers are almost out of production! - - - #reels #teeth #braces #retainers #orthodontics #reaction

I have been my own case study when it comes to permanent retainers. What is a permanent retainer? I explain it in Part 1 of my orthodontic journey. Basically, it’s a stainless steel wire that is cemented to your teeth that stops your teeth from shifting after having braces. Well, I couldn’t figure out why my skull started cracking VERY loudly about eight years ago. I added it up to my permanent retainer on my two front teeth, restricting the natural movement of my hard tissue (bone). However, I’ve had my permanent retainer on for over 20 years. So, why did it not do this right away? Well, I was not in proper oral rest posture before! That’s right. Once I started practicing and, eventually, habituating proper oral rest posture my tongue was pressing on my palate. The pressure of my tongue was slowly trying to remodel the roof of my mouth, but the permanent wire on my top two front teeth was preventing this and created a massive amount of pressure with nowhere to it to go! So, eventually, so much pressure built up that my body found the path of least resistance: my cranial sutures in my skull. 💀 I asked multiple doctors about this and nobody had a clue what I was talking about. But I know what I feel and the timeline of all of this lines up perfectly, functionally speaking. So, what are your thoughts? Do you have a permanent retainer? Have you had it removed? I had my bottom one removed about 3-4 years ago and it felt like a massive relief! This patient actually follows our page and obsession with retainer compliance resonated. He wore his retainers for a few years, but then wore them less than less and if you’re watching the video, this is exactly what a poor fitting retainer looks like. So now even with his teeth slightly out of position, we’re going to make new retainers so that things don’t get any worse and he will be fine cosmetically and functionally. #orthodontics #orthodontics #riverdale #Invisalign

Did you know 👇🏼 Let’s talk about permanent/bonded retainers that are glued to the back of your teeth! ⚪️Bonded retainers are sectional wires glued to the back of the front teeth to keep teeth from shifting or stubborn spaces from reopening 🔴Although often called “permanent retainers,” we all know nothing is permanent in life and nor are these retainers! ⚪️Bonded retainers can be fairly delicate and, with most, you can break them if you bite into something super hard or large foods with the front teeth (just like the food modifications you had while in braces); ⚪️Bonded retainers require you to be VERY disciplined on cleaning, flossing, and brushing around the retainer itself. 🔴Improper cleaning and care of the teeth 🦷 holding the retainer will lead to bone loss and/or recession of gums 🔴Most patients do not realize when these types of retainers are dislodged or broken until the teeth shift! ⚪️Always inspect your retainer nightly to make sure it is still glued! 💡The more you know ➡️Follow @dr.janortho for more tips!
