The reality is that you cannot love without trust. And when you say you love someone but you don’t trust them, then you try to control them and they become psychologically more of a possession. Because you’re trying to tell them how to live their life and what to do so that you can trust them. And one of the great challenges is if you’ve been hurt or betrayed and you’ve trusted people in the past, and so it’s hard to trust, and all of a sudden you’re in a relationship and you’re falling fast, you have feeling, deep feelings, your love is moving faster than your trust. And that creates the space for conflict. And so what you need to do is, quote, “Not deepen your love.” You need to deepen your trust and that will release you from a need to control. And then when you don’t control the other person, they’re with you ‘cause they choose to be with you, but they’re also not suffocating. If you are in a genuinely trust-to-trust relationship, love-to-love relationship, you don’t need to be controlled. You’re committed to the relationship and you still have oxygen to breathe.
