🚨Trigger Warning🚨 Don’t watch if you are easily triggered. 😅 Blobs have been around for some time and Pops Sorin was the first to specifically train with them. They are dumbbells (usually vintage York Roundheads) that have been cut for grip training. The original Blob used a 100lb vintage York roundhead. Over time, this particular implement has evolved to include all weights that gripsters deem useful. They tend to be expensive as one has to have an available single dumbbell that can be sacrificed. From there, it takes some guts and the proper tools. No one likes to talk about it, it is generally frowned upon and I don’t particularly condone it (I do have a set of them 💀)…..but if you are going to do it, here’s how. In this particular video I created a “glob” and a lever (Vintage Globe instead of newer roundhead dumbbell) same steps apply. 1. Protect your eyes/hands appropriately 2. Use an angle grinder with a cut off wheel 3. Create guide marks and cut handle all the way around as close to head as possible 4. Switch to flap wheel 5. Grind down completely until smooth 6. #tooltuesday Today I am comparing different type of media flap wheels. There are 3 main types of flap wheels. Aluminum Oxide, Zirconia, and Ceramic. They are basically rated as good, better, best. But I wanted to put them to the test! . I used a 2”x1/4” piece of HR steel for each test and timed how quickly it would take to clean a 5” section of it. Each flap wheel is a brand new 60 grit Mercer by @championcuttingtool for comparison. . First Test: Aluminum Oxide; crystals made from aluminum and oxygen. Grinding duration was 9 seconds and the wheel felt smooth and had great abrasiveness at first but became dull and less abrasive during use. . Second test: Zirconia; made from Zirconia Alumina, which is self sharpening. Grinding duration was 6 seconds and the wheel felt like grinding butter. Very smooth and maintained good abrasiveness throughout the use. . Third test: Ceraflame(Ceramic); Ceramic grains microfracture as they grind, constantly exposing sharp edges to maintain a high cut rate. Even though all the wheels I tested were 60 grit this wheel seemed to have larger grains on the face of the wheel. It had extreme bite when I made contact with the metal and grinded much deeper much faster than the other wheels. Grinding duration was 7 seconds but removed more material than the other two wheels in that time. . In conclusion I have to say I was surprised how much the ceramic wheel could remove material with the same grit as the others and maintain its performance through the life of the wheel.
