What makes a great flat lay? Here’s a list of details we send our brides to prepare for their big day: 1. 2 copies of your invitations with addressed envelopes– Invitations are a great focal piece for flat lays because it sets the tone for the wedding. Guests can often get a sense of the style and colors of the event including the appropriate attire to wear through the look of the invitations. Addressed envelopes add a personal, elegant touch, especially if they are handwritten by a calligrapher. 2. Rings, all THREE– This means the engagement ring and both wedding bands. You can also include custom ring boxes with your wedding colors and embossed NEW last name or wedding date. @the_mrs_box has great options to drool over! 3. Shoes– You decided to spoil yourself and get those really elegant heels. This is a way to make sure they get their own spotlight! Jewelry– Whether that’s wearing your grandma’s heirloom bracelet that’s been passed down through generations or the new diamond earrings that your future husband gave you that morning, we love capturing every detail that creates the full bridal look. 5. Perfume– Dress up your flat lay with your signature scent. Smell has a strong connection to our memories, and remembering the exact perfume you used that day will bring you right back to that moment! 6. Family heirlooms– Wearing grandma’s veil or your mom’s necklace? This is a perfect chance to have those precious legacy items photographed! 7. Florals– Your wedding day flowers provide a chance to be creative, funky, classic or bold and to express your unique personality and style. Ask your florist for extra sprigs of flowers specifically for the flat lay. Lovely blooms add texture and cohesion to your details. 8. Time– Creating a beautiful flat lay takes time! We like to allot 45-60 minutes to design and shoot your unique flat lays. We schedule this during when you’re finishing up hair and makeup to ensure we aren’t missing any key moments. Finding good light and eliminating shadows on your flat lay can sometimes be a little tricky. The first rule of thumb is that you want to find good window light - with minimal harsh lighting, i.e. the sun shining directly into the window making it too bright or causing shadows. In my studio, for example, I know I can only shoot in the afternoons because it gets direct light in the morning and it’s too harsh to shoot in. Then you’ll want to use a reflector on the side opposite of the window to bounce the window light evenly across your flat lay. This will instantly help remove any shadows the window is creating. I like to use a white tri-fold poster board because it’s light weight and can stand up on its own. I actually cut this one in half so it wasn’t so big. Once you’ve shot your flat lay, open it up in Photoshop. You can see how the side closest to the window can be a little brighter than the reflector side, so I use the Dodge and Burn tools in Photoshop to dodge the left side of the image and burn the right side to make them look a little more balanced. Just press “O” for the Dodge and Burn tools and use “Shift + O” to toggle between them. I use an exposure anywhere between 10-15%. Now it looks much better! I Hope that helps! To recreate this flatlay photo with my 3 tips: 1. Start with placing the bigger plates on the table first. 2. Place a side plate(s) underneath to give the photo dimension and height. The height will cast a shadow; because a flatlay can be “too flat”. 3. Think asymmetrically, and place the objects in a way that allows the viewer to glide their eyes across the image.
