❌ The cold hard facts ⬇️ Actually, someone is talking about it. The International Energy Agency has already advised working from home, carpooling and reducing travel to ease fuel demand as the war in the Middle East drags on. Yet many employers aren’t doing anything about it, because they’re still stuck on visibility as a measure of productivity. If they can’t see you, they assume you’re not working. This is a sign of workplace culture and design that hasn’t matured to keep up with the times. It’s also a sign of a measurement problem. We have the tools now. Data, workflows, AI and whatnot. If you can’t assess productivity without physical presence, the problem is your operating model. It’s not your workers. Here’s the uncomfortable part. In a genuine supply shock, insisting on daily commutes is both inefficient and irresponsible. We talk a lot about sustainability and resilience in business. This is what it looks like in practice. Use less fuel. Reduce unnecessary movement. Keep people working without adding pressure to a strained system. Also worth asking: wouldn’t developing technology to measure workplace productivity in a more sophisticated way be a far better use of AI than surveillance theatre? If your workplace hasn’t caught up, this is the moment to push. There needs to be a practical response to what’s happening globally. In this case, flexibility and doing the right thing are one and the same.
