Artist John Knuth orders hundreds of thousands of fly larvae, raises them into adult houseflies, then feeds them sugar water mixed with acrylic pigment. Flies can’t chew — they regurgitate digestive enzymes to liquefy food, then ingest it again. Knuth uses that biology. The flies land on canvas and repeatedly vomit colored droplets, creating abstract, pointillist-like compositions. It looks chaotic — but the artist controls the color palette, density, and surface placement. He chooses the tones, rotates canvases, and guides the final aesthetic. The result? Large-scale works that have sold for $30,000 to over $100,000, exhibited internationally. Disturbing? Maybe. But it proves a brutal art-world truth: value isn’t about comfort — it’s about concept. This work examines the relationship between authorship, skill, and market validation in contemporary art. The simplicity of the repetitive underlying composition appears mechanically simple, yet its market status is anything but. Pivoting from this serially produced artistic “brand,” the piece questions whether value is generated through artistic labour or through the authority of a name. The disparity between perceived effort and economic worth is ever-present. The butterfly expands this enquiry on multiple registers. It recalls both Hirst’s history of artworks constructed from preserved specimens and the long-standing tradition of collecting as an act of possession. Referring equally to the collector and to the act of acquisition itself, it prompts questions regarding the value that recognition holds over discernment. Rebecca Manson (@rmanson) creates her giant insect wing sculptures using hundreds of thousands of tiny pieces of porcelain. Each clay fragment is glazed in a vibrant, nature-inspired hue, bisque-fired, and then attached to the huge wings in dense, feather-like clusters. The results drape off gallery walls, with iridescent patterns mimicking intricate colour variations found on creatures in real life – encapsulating both the fragility and resilience of nature, and the interconnectedness of our ecosystems.
