Can floaters make you go blind? In most cases, floaters are harmless and are a normal part of aging. Floaters occur when the gel inside the eye (the vitreous) begins to change over time. As the vitreous becomes more liquid, small clumps or strands can form and cast shadows on the retina. These shadows are what you see as floaters drifting in your vision. However, sudden new floaters can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition, including: • a retinal tear • a retinal detachment • inflammation inside the eye If a retinal detachment occurs and is not treated promptly, it can lead to permanent vision loss. You should seek an eye exam if you notice: • a sudden increase in floaters • flashes of light • a dark shadow or curtain in your vision Most floaters are benign, but new or rapidly changing symptoms should always be evaluated by an eye doctor to make sure the retina is healthy. The darkest moment of my life was when my eyesight started disappearing. After an accident, a large number of photoreceptors in both of my retinas were burned. My vision became so blurry and black that I couldn’t even clearly see my own face in the mirror — or recognize the faces of others. Blurred vision. Floaters everywhere. Light sensitivity. Parts of my visual field were simply… gone. Doctors told me I might have to live with it. But deep inside I felt there had to be another way.
