Don’t skip on flossing your molars!! I know, I know, molars are the trickiest part but hear me out. As a dentist of 7 years, the majority of cavities I am fixing are on the back teeth. I want to show you the easiest way I have found to hold the floss and reach my molars. Give it a few tries before you throw in the towel. This is something that you will get better with over time. Always option C 😎 Use the “C” shape technique to adapt the floss around the tooth and under the gum to remove that pesky bacteria that your toothbrush can’t reach! If the floss is just snapping between your teeth and not getting under your gums, it’s not really doing it’s job. The floss needs to get below the gums ~2-3mm to clean and remove the bacteria that lead to gum inflammation and bleeding gums. Did you know this? 👀

How to floss with floss picks! It’s not as easy to create the C curve around the root of the tooth with floss picks. This is why I don’t love them but if you can get the floss to adapt i’ll take it! Do you use a floss pick or string floss?

Here are 3 things you can use to floss when you have braces :) 1. Floss Threader & Dental Floss - Helps with areas of tight spaces 2. Superfloss @oralb - There’s a stiffened end that helps to get around the wire and in between your teeth. 3. Ortho Flosser - This does not adapt to your teeth as well but this is a quick on-the-go option. Water flosser is helpful in maintaining oral hygiene but is not a REPLACEMENT for traditional flossing where the floss string cleans the contact points. Do you know how to floss properly?! Here’s a quick animation 🙃 ⁣ 3️⃣ words I always use when it comes to flossing: ⁣ 1. Hug ⁣ 2. Scoop ⁣ 3. (Go) deep ⁣ ⁣ When flossing...hug, scoop and go deep! That’s all you’re doing. Don’t be afraid of the blood. ⁣ ⁣ 🙇🏻‍♀️Possible reasons why your gums bleed... ⁣ - You’re not flossing everyday ⁣ - Yes, you’re flossing, but you’re doing it improperly ⁣ ⁣ ♻️How to floss properly...⁣ - With floss, create a “c-shape” or “hug” against your tooth ⁣ - Slide floss below the gums and go deep, the deeper the better. ⁣ - It is okay to feel discomfort or see bleeding. ⁣ - Make a “scoop-like” motion with the floss to make sure you remove all the plaque⁣ - Repeat several times⁣ ⁣ 🥅 Goal// to not bleed anymore, to stimulate your gums and cause disorder to the bacteria living below your gums⁣ ⁣ 🩸 If your gums bleed and you know you are flossing properly and consistently, then ask yourself when was your last teeth cleaning? ⁣ ⁣ Note// if you’re new to flossing or new to this technique, bleeding is totally normal! It will take some time for your gums to get used to this.
