Year one I planted all the “easy” flowers, cosmos, zinnias, amaranth, celosia, even a few dahlias thinking they’d be my focal blooms. Spoiler: I killed all the dahlias 😅, then the cosmos got hit with aphids. I also spaced my rows and seedlings too far apart (thanks, seed packets 😬), which meant even my surviving flowers weren’t optimized for bouquets. By the end of the season, my whole garden made just one bouquet a week — ONE. Now I focus on one focal flower and one supporting filler that I can use across multiple bouquets. I don’t plant everything. Most of my bouquets are straightforward, but my customers love them and so do I. I don’t have a huge acreage or farm. I grow everything in a tiny suburban backyard and sell from my driveway flower stand… and it’s kind of perfect for me. #flowerstand #cutflowergarden #backyardgarden #flowergrower #suburbangarden

I’m not talking to large scale farmers, commercial growers, or even soloprenuers who flower farm as their full time job. I’m talking to homestead mamas, flower lovers, folks who want to make enough to cover their gardening expenses for the year and maybe make enough for a cool landscaping project or a trip to the ocean this summer. You absolutely can make money selling flowers but here’s the kicker… You can’t spend more growing them than you make selling them. 🤣 Duh. But flower farming can get crazy expensive, even on a micro scale. One of the best ways to keep than in check is to stick to simple, field grown varieties that don’t require lots of labor to grow or harvest. My favorites: zinnias, cosmos, and sunflowers.
