Dumbo the Flying elephant is such an iconic ride. Most everyone who has been as a kid has a photo on Dumbo. This ride is so loved that it’s the only ride at every Disney park. Magic Kingdom even has two!!! We always like walking by and watching the elephants go soaring around. The line gets pretty long so we usually only ride this if it’s really early in the morning. It’s actually faster than you think! It’s fun! They will assign you a number when you get to the front of the line. This will tell you which elephant is yours and what color it is. Make sure to go to your elephant. Some people don’t pay attention and go to whichever elephant they’d like, then it gets confusing and people are searching for open elephants. They need a sign too I think that tells people what the numbers they are standing on means. If you don’t get your assigned Dumbo, it’s ok! The CM will help you find an open one 😊 Once you are in it’s time for you elephant to fly!!! We love the view from up here too. We are always looking for interesting and unique views of the park. Dumbo octopus are famous for their striking resemblance to the beloved flying elephant. These creatures have large fins (not ears) on their mantle, which they use to gracefully “flap” through the water. Unlike many other types of octopus, Dumbo do not move by expelling water forcefully from a siphon - they have no jet propulsion. They can flap, glide, and swim throughout the water column, but are generally seen near the seafloor. Keep an eye out for a quick cameo from the headless chicken monster (AKA Enypniastes, a genus of deep-sea sea cucumber. Footage from Dive 640 of the ongoing #SEPacificSeamounts expedition.

They are also known to exhibit a fascinating behavior seen here: expanding their eight webbed arms like an open umbrella, giving us a wonderful look at its arms, lined with suckers and small tendrils called cirri. Sometimes the octopus swiftly contract the arms and webbing, propelling itself forward quickly in a “pulse” reminiscent of a jellyfish’s movement. This time the octopus didn’t attempt to flee, so instead might have been making itself as large and intimating as possible to our Remotely Operated Vehicle, much like a cat can “puff” up to threaten and signal an intruder to back down immediately.
