Are you still struggling to read a surf forecast? Here are the 3 metrics that actually matter and most surfers get them wrong. Wave Height measured from the trough to the crest of an open ocean wave. It’s the number everyone looks at first, but it’s actually not the most important one. Period the time interval between each wave passing a fixed point (like a buoy). This is the one you should really care about. A longer period = more energy stored below the surface, meaning heavier, more powerful waves regardless of height. Direction the angle the swell is traveling. The more directly a swell hits a beach, the more power gets translated into the surf. Refraction around the coastline can kill a swell fast. Next time you check a forecast, stop fixating on height alone. Look at the period first. That number tells the real story. Save this for your next surf check. #surftips #surfcoaching #surfing #learntosurf #howtosurf

Big green wave, clean surf conditions, and a surfer carving down the face — but something is moving inside the wave with him. A dark shadow follows every turn as he rides the line. Is it a shark tracking the surfer through the water? Short ocean moment that shows how close surfers sometimes get to marine predators like great white sharks without even realizing it. Surfing the ocean means sharing the water with wildlife. Sometimes the camera catches it. #sharks #waves

Back-to-back frontal systems provided southerly windswell this week, but what we’re more excited about is a stronger system impacting the U.S. East Coast early next week. This system will move up through the Great Lakes region, with a trailing cold front along the eastern U.S. driving 30–35 knot south to southeast winds over a large portion of the western Atlantic. That should set up a solid shot of swell holding through Monday, with leftovers Tuesday and into Wednesday. A longboarder takes off on a right-hand screamer, attempting to position themselves for a thrilling ride. However, as they trim along the face, it becomes clear that they’re struggling to gain enough speed to stay ahead of the rapidly peeling wave. Despite their efforts to trim, the wave begins to pitch and eventually overtakes them, engulfing them in whitewater as they get caught inside. How would you have approached this wave differently? Would you have chosen a different takeoff point to gain more speed? Perhaps a more aggressive bottom turn or a higher line on the wave face could have helped maintain momentum. Share your thoughts on how you would have tackled this challenging wave! #stoked #pacificnorthwest #surfing #surf #oregonsurf #surfpnw #bigwaves #travel #surfer #pnwwonderland #oregoncoast
