The banks picked the one homeowner in America whose entire career was spotting forged signatures. In 2008 Lynn Szymoniak, a Florida attorney and insurance-fraud investigator, stopped paying her mortgage. Cancer had drained her savings and she'd cut back work to care for her dying mother. Deutsche Bank, as trustee for a mortgage-backed security, sued to seize her Palm Beach Gardens home. Then the bank's own filings claimed it had acquired her mortgage note three months after filing the lawsuit. Szymoniak pulled the documents. She had spent two decades in court spotting forged signatures for insurance fraud cases. In less than five days at her kitchen table she traced the fakes to a "document mill" run by Lender Processing Services in Alpharetta, Georgia. Different employees were all signing the same invented name — Linda Green — in completely different handwriting, across tens of thousands of foreclosure documents. One imaginary woman was being used to throw real families out of real houses. She filed under the False Claims Act. In February 2012, five banks — Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Ally Financial — agreed to a $25 billion settlement, the largest federal-state civil deal in US history at the time. Szymoniak's personal cut was $18 million. She used it to start the Housing Justice Foundation. A decade later, she's still taking calls from foreclosure victims. Fraud at scale needs paperwork at scale. Paperwork at scale needs one signature it can copy a million times. That's the seam. That's where it always tears. Just to be clear, I don’t know how my mom did it but she supported my dad through all of his adventures. She never had a problem with him quitting his corporate job and they’re just really sweet together and now they live in a tiny little house and it’s perfect for them so it may be a cautionary tale about getting a business manager. I think that that would’ve made all the difference but my dad was a little bit controlling and wanted to do everything in his own business.
